two thirds. She was second in the St Nicholas Express-G3 and third in the Rainbow Derby-G1 and All American Derby-G1. She earned $91,956 for the year. She then had six starts at four, with two wins and one second. She won the 1989 Miss Princess Handicap-G2 and was
a finalist in the All American Gold Cup-G1, World’s Championship Classic-G1 and Shue
Fly-G3. She earned $23,243 at four and that brought her total earnings to $1,186.540.
Dr. Edward Allred bought Elans Special
in 1988 and she retired from racing in 1989. She produced the first of 14 foals in 1991 and produced a total of 12 starters and 10 ROM with earners of $205,487. She is the dam of one Quarter Horse stakes winner and two Quarter
Horse stakes placed runners. Her stakes winner is Gotothemountain, winner of the California Sires Cup Futurity-RG2. Elans Special is also the dam of Paint runner Really Special, a stakes winner of the Masterpiece Futurity-G1. Really Special was the 2005 APHA Racing World Champion and Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Filly.
The produce record of Elans Special is
living on through the foals of her daughters. Her grandget include 5-time Champion Catchmeinyourdreams; New Look, winner of four stakes including the 2012 El Primero Del Ano Derby-G2; and Nymph, a 4-time stakes winner including the 2016 California Breeders’ Debutante Stakes. The latest runner from this family is her grandson Chance To Fire, who was second in the 2017 Governor’s Cup Futurity-G2 and third in the 2017 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1.
Elans Special put it all together to win the 1987 All American Futurity-G1, dominating her competition. We don’t know how it would have turned out if Shoot Yeah could have run, but it certainly would have been a “battle of the sexes.”
Elans Special had Florida ties and her win gave the state of Florida back-to- back wins, as the 1986 All American Futurity winner was Ronas Ryon.
The McArthur family team had two qualifiers in the All American Futurity and when the gates opened, it was Corona Cash all the way getting a head win over gelding Flys R Droppin in second and Royal N Perfect third. Tami Purcell guided her to the win in :21.55 to win the $888,690.
Before it was final, however, an inquiry went up. When that was settled, Royal N Perfect was disqualified to fifth, moving Honor Ease to third and Memorize to fourth. The rest of the field finished in the following order: Dashin Easy, Accusato, This Snow Is Royal, Runaway Fortune and Cautious Memories. Cautious Memories was the Rainbow Futurity winner.
The McArthur family “battle of the sexes” didn’t materialize as This Snow Is Royal stumbled at the break and lost all chance to win. He would get his revenge when Donna McArthur took Corona Cash and This Snow
Is Royal back to Los Alamitos. This Snow Is Royal won The Racing Quarter Horse Journal Stakes and then he beat Corona Cash in the Los
Corona Cash Wins The 1997 All American Futurity
The win by Corona Cash in the 1997 All American Futurity G1 was a clean sweep for
the ladies. Corona Cash was the first filly since Strawberry Silk in 1989 to win the All American Futurity. Her trainer Donna McArthur was the second woman to train an All American winner. Her jockey Tami Purcell was the first woman jockey to win the All American Futurity. So much for the “battle of the sexes.” Or was it?
The backstory for the 1997 All American was that the race was a family affair for those involved with Corona Cash and with a colt known named This Snow Is Royal. Corona Cash was owned by Oscar McArthur’s Jaramar Ltd. and trained by Donna McArthur. This Snow Is Royal was owned by Jaramar Ltd and Partners and trained by James McArthur. Oscar is James’ brother and James is married to Donna.
Corona Cash was bred by Robert Etchandy in California, and was purchased as a yearling by Jaramar Ltd. She was sired by First Down Dash and out of Corona Chick by Chicks Beduino. She took the Los Alamitos route to the All
American with Donna McArthur as her trainer. She won the Governor’s Cup Futurity-RG1 and the Ed Burke Memorial Futurity-G1 on the way to Ruidoso.
This Snow Is Royal was bred in California by Abigail K. Kawananakoa and was purchased by Jaramar Ltd and Partners as a yearling. He was sired by Chicks Beduino and out of Florentine by Dash For Cash. He took the Ruidoso route to the All American with James McArthur
as his trainer. He qualified to the Rainbow Futurity-G1, going unplaced in the finals as his only stakes appearance.
Corona Cash arrived at Ruidoso 10 days before the All American trials. She qualified
for the finals by winning her trial on an off track going the 440 yards in :21.63. This
Snow Is Royal won his trial in :21.51 as the second fastest qualifier. The fastest qualifier was Memorize, who went in with :21.48. Flys R Droppin qualified with the 4th fastest time of :21.57. Honor Ease qualified 8th with a time of :21.65, and Royal N Perfect qualified in :21.68.
