and reinforcing the legend of the All American Dream while challenging the boys and the girls, too.
An added note: The 1997 All American Futurity was a race for the ladies, with four
of the jockeys being women. They were Tami Purcell (Corona Cash), Cammie Pappineau (Royal N Perfect), Nancy Summers (Honor Ease) and Tanya Laib (Runaway Fortune). You might call that a “battle of the sexes” that was won by the woman, as three of the top five finishers were ridden by the ladies.
The backstory for the 1997 All American was that the race was a family affair for those involved with Corona Cash and with
a colt known named This Snow Is Royal.
Alamitos Million Futurity-G1 where Corona Cash finished sixth.
Corona Cash was sold in October of 1997 to Henry Brown and she continued to race for him through her 5-year-old year. She ran 9 races at three with 6 wins, 2 seconds and a third for $236,785 with four stakes wins, including the Los Alamitos Derby-G1 and Governor’s Cup Derby-RG1. She was the Champion 3 Year Old and Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. Her record at four includes three wins and two seconds in six starts and earnings of $142,534. She won three stakes that year, including the Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap-G1. She had six starts
at five with three wins, a second and a third, earning $58,400. Her stakes win that year was the Dash For Speed Handicap. Overall, she started 32 times with 19 wins, 7 seconds and 2 thirds earning a total of $1,542,880.
Corona Cash, the hard-working racehorse, became the hard-working broodmare. She is
the dam of 36 foals with 27 starters, 26 ROM, three stakes winners and five stakes placed runners. Her foals have earned $994,036. Her leading money earner is Louisiana Corona, winner of $186,206 including the Juno Request Stakes-G2. Corona Cash’s current owner is Guy Rodrigues Peixoto Jr.
Henry Brown bred her for many years, and in those years, he experimented with breeding her to cutting horse sires Peptoboonsmal,
Hes A Peptospoonful and One Time Pepto. The only one with an AQHA show record is Corona And Pepto, by One Time Pepto, who has an AQHA ROM with 13 points in barrel racing and 4 points in reining, and he is also
a money earner in the National Reined Cow Horse Association.
Corona Cash won the 1997 All American Futurity, putting her in that class of special horses that have won this great race. Then she continued on to a stellar racing career, showcasing her power as a runner
Heartswideopen Wins The 2007 All American Futurity
The win by Heartswideopen in the 2007 All American Futurity-G1 was listed as a “battle.” Not of the sexes, but of the fillies. Heartswideopen and a filly named Wild Six had each won one of the Ruidoso Triple Crown races. Heartswideopen won the first leg in the Ruidoso Futurity-G1, and Wild Six won the Rainbow Futurity-G1. The All American Futurity was to be the rubber match.
The story of Heartswideopen’s trip to the All American winner’s circle begins when she was purchased at the Ruidoso All American Futurity Sale for $60,000 by Javier and Manny
Rodriguez. She was bred by Kirk Goodfellow. Her sire was Feature Mr Jess and she was out of Dashing Phoebe by Dash For Cash.
The Rodriguez brothers went looking for a trainer and Carl Draper became their target. Carl had won the 2004 All American Futurity with DM Shicago. The brothers from Mexico found Carl while looking for property for their racing activities in the U.S. It was Carl and Fredda Drapers son Dallas who introduced them to Carl while helping them find the right property.
Draper, a well known New Mexico trainer,
had a business plan. Any horse he trained would be owned by the Drapers or co-owned by them in partnership before they took them into their stable. Breaking protocol, Carl took on two of the Rodriquez yearlings and one of them was Heartswideopen. According to the story, Carl took the yearlings and the Rodriguez brothers bought the property his son was showing them.
Heartswideopen won her maiden at Sunland Park and then she won her trial for the West Texas Futurity-G1. She came back in the West Texas finals to run sixth. The winner of the West
