to Ruidoso for the trials, One Dashing Eagle was based at Los Alamitos, where
he won the $1,041,000 Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1 by 1 1/4 lengths. He was the 3-2 favorite in the Ed Burke Million after setting the fastest-qualifying time of :17.555 for the 350 yards.
When it came time to ship One Dashing Eagle to New Mexico, the De La Torres relied on the experience they had gained last year, when they made the trip to Ruidoso Downs with One Sweet Jess.
In 2011, One Sweet Jess left California for New Mexico in order to run in the trials to the Ruidoso Derby-G1. He shipped in two weeks prior to the trials, where he ran second and qualified, and returned to finish sixth in the finals.
“The other horse, One Sweet Jess, when we brought him last year, we brought him two weeks before the trials and he qualified and ran sixth,” said trainer and co-owner Jose De La Torre. “We didn’t run him back for the Rainbow, we let him recuperate. He never really did get acclimated.
“We got here early (with One Dashing Eagle). As soon as we won the Ed Burke, we took him home and rested him for a week and then brought him here. He had a little over five weeks here before the trials. It helped him a lot and that was the key.”
In addition to the Ruidoso experi-
ence they gained with One Sweet Jess, the stallion played an even bigger role in One Dashing Eagle’s All American success. He was the reason the De La Torres bought One Dashing Eagle in the first place. They won the 2010 Golden State Million Futurity-G1 with One Sweet Jess, who is a half-brother
