  All Canadian Futurity
CArTerS SeCreT
by Tracy Gantz
Carters Secret is a brave young horse. Three incidents could have lost him the Aug. 21 All Canadian Futurity at Ajax Downs. But he
overcame them all to keep his record a perfect two-for-two.
When the gate opened, Carters Secret stumbled slightly and veered into What Ta Wear. Shortly thereafter, he ran into tight quarters between What Ta Wear on his outside and Poutn With Speed on his inside.
Jockey Helen Vanek kept Carters Secret to his task, and then First Down The Track lugged in badly, cross- ing in front of three horses, right up next to Carters Secret. The gelding didn’t flinch, thrusting his neck
in front of First Down The Track to win in :17.980 for the 350 yards.
Jeff MacLaren and Rebecca Vanderlinde, the
jockey and trainer of third-place What Ta Wear, lodged objections against First Down The Track. However, the stewards ruled no change.
Erik Lehtinen owns and bred Carters Secret with Joyce Lehtinen, and he also trains the gelding. Carters Secret debuted in his All Canadian Futurity trial, winning by a neck in the fastest qualifying time.
Dollish, a winning daughter of Pritzi Dash, produced Carters Secret, one of the mare’s six winners from seven starters. Her foals also include 2008 Retama Park Futurity-G1 winner Zoomin Doll and stakes-placed Rapid Fire Jess and Get A Secret. Dollish is a half-sister to Ed Burke Memorial Futurity-G1 winner Heza Secret Diamond and a full sister to multiple Grade 3 winner He Doll. The
Lehtinens bought Dollish for $13,000 at the 2007 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale. Erika Smilovsky rode First Down The
Track (Corona Cartel-First Down Runner) for trainer Don Reid. Richard Wincikaby and the DK Training Centre own the filly, who won
the Princess Futurity at Ajax. Richard Laszlo owns What Ta Wear (Game Patriot-Stoli Wear), whose four-race record now stands at one sec- ond, two thirds, and a fourth in four starts.
Completing the field were Bye Me One Kool Bud (Dashin Bye-One Kool Bud), Jess Tex Me (Mr Jess Tex-Rippin Dash), Tough Twist (Wave Carver-Hop Kip And Jump), Jessies Leaving You (Coronas Leaving You- Jessies Arrangement), Poutn With Speed (Its All About Speed-Poutnlori), and Joanna James (Ivory James-Seperate Em Josie). Lindas Furrs Aflying was scratched.

rogue County hadn’t had the best of luck before he headed to Ajax Downs. After finishing second in his racing debut, the
gelding lost his rider in his next start, had a bumpy beginning the next time, and then hesitated at the break in his fourth outing. He put it all together at Ajax, however, to capture the Aug. 28 John Deere Ajax Downs Juvenile Challenge and earn a berth in the John
Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 on Oct. 27 at Prairie Meadows.
Several horses came out of the gate vying for the lead in the 350-yard Juvenile Challenge, including Rogue County, who this time broke well. He lengthened his stride under jockey Brian Bell to quickly take charge. CR Cartin The Cash, the 4-5 favorite, closed ground toward the wire, but she
couldn’t catch Rogue County, who won by a neck in :18.280 as the third choice.
Bell also piloted Rogue County in his
Ajax Juvenile Challenge trial, which he won
by a neck to post the fastest qualifying time. That marked the gelding’s first victory, though he had qualified for two earlier futurities, the Pot O’ Gold at Sun Downs and the Firecracker Futurity at Evergreen Park. He now has two
wins in six starts and lifetime earnings of $21,980.
Cedric Hayden trains Rogue County, who was bred by the Hayden Brothers Ranch in Oregon and races for Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch and Racing. The placed mare Royal Stakes Quick produced Rogue County and two other win- ners from six starters, includ- ing multiple stakes-placed winner Hill Billee Deluxe.
CR Cartin The Cash (Carters Cartel-Air Traffic Controlr) has now run second twice and third twice in four outings. Scott Sterr has piloted her every time for trainer Stan Webb. Cadence Racing owns the filly.
Golden Arrangement (Gold Medal Jess- The Arrangement) finished third under Erika Smilovsky, who won two earlier races on
the gelding. James Bratton owns and trains Golden Arrangement.
Completing the field in the John Deere Ajax Juvenile Challenge were North Pole Guy (Separatist-Guys Like It), Hi N Dry (Royal Shake Em-It’s A Dry Heat-TB), Im A Bit
A Blazin (Chicks A Blazin-A Bit Of Dash), Braggs Hero (Valiant Hero-Trickie Lassie), Stel A Flying (Stel Corona-Yeah Im Flying), and Kananaskis (Its All About Speed-Sheza Special Chick). Stel Artois was scratched.
