  Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity
JuLIA Meyer
by John Moorehouse
Julia Meyer finished third in a trial for the $57,770 Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity, qualifying with the sixth-fastest time. In the futurity itself, there was no faster horse in the eight-horse field as the 2-year-old filly charged to victory in the Aug. 25 competition held at Northlands Park.
Bred by owners Lorne and Joann Winther, Julia Meyer logged her second win in four lifetime outs. The Winthers
reaped a $25,996 payday
from this victory that increased their filly’s earn- ings to $28,285.
Thus far, Julia Meyer has run exclusively at tracks in the Canadian province
of Alberta. She debuted at Lethbridge at the end of June, then tallied her first win in a 250-yard maiden at Grande Prairie before head- ing to Northlands Park.
Julia Meyer, Secret Corvette and Me
O Me O My waged a battle for first place
for the entirety of this 330-yard competi- tion. Secret Corvette held the advantage the majority of the way, leading Julia Meyer by
a head as they reached the stretch with Me
O Me O My trailing by an additional half- length. Julia Meyer executed the best finish of the trio, however, and outnodded Me O Me O
My at the wire.
Les Webb trains Julia
Meyer, who finished in :17.480 and tallied an 83 speed index in a race that was hand timed. Jockey Juan Garcia drew the riding assignment.
Julia Meyer is the only foal of racing age produced
by her dam, Mea Be Fit To Fly, a winning 2005 mare also owned by the Winthers.
Me O Me O My (Streakinisanattitude-
Utellum TB) still is seeking his first victory, but did produce a five-figure payday for owner/breeder Don Houlton with this runner-up finish. Laurie Ferguson trains the gelding and Jose Guerrero did the riding. Secret Corvette (Mac Meyers-Rapid Secret), the third-place finisher, is owned by Joann Winther and trained by Les Webb—the same connections as the winner. Secret Corvette was the fastest qualifier for the futurity, and had Blandford Stewart aboard for the stakes final.
Jimbobb (Sizzlin Red Corona-Rocky La Jolla), Jess Cash N In (Crimson Jess-Mity Easy Cash), Roc N Attitude (Streakinisanattitude- Roco On The Run) and pre-race favorite O Charleston Chew (Streakinisanattitude-Ima Runnin Jessie) rounded out the order of finish. Beautitude was scratched.

Battle of the Breeds Fall Challenge
FeArLeS FreD
by Michael Compton
Fearles Fred’s affinity for the Fort Erie surface was no secret to handicappers head- ing into the $40,049 Battle of the Breeds Fall
Challenge on Sept. 3. Sent off as the odds-on choice in a compact field of four, Fearles Fred, the race’s defending champion, justified the favoritism with a one-length triumph under Helen Vanak. He covered the 440 yards in a brisk :21.860.
A Walter Harrison homebred, Fearles Fred is
a well-traveled 5-year-old gelding. His six races this season have come at five different racetracks. His second consecutive win in the Battle of the Breeds Fall Challenge was his ninth stakes score. He has won four graded stakes events—the 2009 Mt Pleasant Meadows Budweiser Stakes-G3,
that year’s All American
Congress Futurity-G3, the 2011 Fort Erie Championship Challenge-G3 and this year’s Fort Erie Championship Challenge-G3
on July 2. The latter qualified him for the AQHA Challenge Championships in late October at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.
Trained by Carol Rettele, Fearles Fred knows where the wire is. A winner in half of his 30 career starts, the Texas-bred has
accumulated a bankroll of $244,955. In addition to the stakes wins, he has also placed in four added-money events. In 2010, his exploits earned him Central Hi-Point 3-Year- Old Gelding honors.
Precious Debutante, the dam of Fearles Fred, was
a two-time stakes winner
and was a multiple graded stakes-placed runner during her racing career for Harrison. She won eight of 23 starts
and earned $34,836. In addition to Fearles Fred, Precious Debutante has produced graded stakes winner Ida Snow Man, an earner of $163,879 and stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Mr Corona to You. All told, her progeny have earned $547,927.
Struttin High (Struttin To Beduino- Regally Rare) finished a game second under Cody McDaniel. Bred in Montana by Michael Teel, Struttin High races for Gully Enterprises Inc. The 7-year-old gelding is conditioned by Alvin Turner.
Finishing third was Hooked On Mercury (Plantary-Hooked Request). Alan Todd trains the 8-year-old gelding for Jane Todd. Danielle DiBert was in the irons.
The fourth and final finisher in the Battle of the Breeds Fall Challenge was Get a Leg Up (Stel Corona-Up Down Dash).
