 Faubourg St. John Stakes
CAT FIve STorM
By Michael Compton
Talk about hunch plays. With Tropical Storm Isaac churning toward the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, Aug. 25, Louisiana-bred Cat Five Storm notched her first win of the year in the $30,000 Faubourg St. John Stakes at Fair Grounds. The top 870-yard feature during the Fair Grounds stand, the Faubourg St. John Stakes attracted a competitive group of distance specialists.
Doyles Dashing Star broke sharply and took control early under
John Dearmon. Extending
his advantage to as many as
three lengths into the stretch, Doyles Dashing Star, seeking his second consecutive stakes score, appeared well on his way to his fourth win from five starts at the distance. But Cat Five Storm had other ideas.
After racing in fourth position early, Cat Five Storm inched closer to the
leader around the turn. Swung out from behind runners at the head of the lane by Gilbert Ortiz, Cat Five Storm hit her best stride in the stretch and went on to win by three-quarters of a length. Doyles Dashing Star settled for second, 1 1⁄2 lengths in front of Streakin King Corona in third. The winner covered the distance in :46.459 for owner Teddy Abrams Jr. and trainer Frank Cavazos.
The only mare in the field, Cat Five Storm was bred by Dale R. White Sr.
of Abbeville, Louisiana. Her dam, winner She Wants Cash, has also produced stakes- placed runners Hollywood La Jolla, I Want Cash and We Want Cash.
Cat Five Storm has now won seven of 26 career starts, including four stakes, all of them at 870 yards including a track
record-setting performance at Delta Downs last year. The $18,000 winner’s share of
the purse boosted her earnings to more than $140,000.
Doyles Dashing Star (Heza Fast Dash- Georgia Wildcat) was saddled by Gene Stephens. The 6-year-old mare races for Rachael L. Stephens, lessee. Third-place finisher Streakin King Corona (King Corona- Streakin Pacific), is campaigned by Gene Cox and was saddled by Donnie Strickland.
The top three were followed across the wire by Leading Patriot (Game Patriot-Little Miss Leader -TB), Dirty Boy Friend (Dirty Coup-Go Girl Friend), Dr Drip (First To Shine-High Seas Operator) and Eyeonetheline (Eye Yin You-Bobbie Lou-TB). Heza Dashing Dream (Heza Fast Dash-Celtic Dream-TB) was scratched.
