One week after Cold Cash 123 had been named World Champion, it still hadn’t sunk
in. In fact, Carolyn Bay wasn’t sure
it ever would. Even as she and her husband, Walt, fielded calls about their homebred gelding and his recent championship, it was still hard to believe it had actually happened. Geldings from Michigan aren’t sup- posed to win World Championships. Smaller breeders rarely get to expe- rience the thrill of raising a World Champion.
But he did, and they are.
Before he could be named World Champion, Cold Cash 123 had to win his age and sex division, and 2011 was a tough year
for three-year-old geldings. One of Cold Cash 123’s biggest rivals was Llano Teller. The two geldings traded wins throughout the year: Llano Teller won the Ruidoso Derby; Cold Cash 123 won the Rainbow Derby. Llano Teller won the All American Derby; Cold Cash 123 won the Texas Classic Derby.
In the end, it came down to the last days of the year, as both Llano Teller and Cold Cash 123 stepped up to face older horses for the first time. Llano Teller went to the Champion of Champions, finishing sixth behind eventual Champion Aged Horse Good Reason SA. Cold Cash 123 went to The Championship
at Sunland Park and ran one of his best races of the year, absolutely destroying a field that included eventual Champion Aged Gelding Rylees Boy.
It was the perfect ending to a nearly perfect season. As a three-year-old, Cold Cash 123 suffered only two losses. The first was in a 400-yard trial to the Heritage Place Derby-G1. The second was in the All American Derby.
“He just got overanxious, and he turned his head and got away way behind,” said jockey Roy Baldillez, who rode Cold Cash 123 in the All American Derby. “Then he lost his running position. He was trying to run through them, he didn’t have anywhere to go.
Cold Cash 123 scores a victory in the Grade 1 Texas Classic Derby at Lone Star Park.
