a man of few words, so when he says a horse is as good a horse as he’s ever had, you’d better listen up. It’s high praise from the man who saddled the likes of Refrigerator and this year’s World Champion, Cold Cash 123. Gilbreath said exactly that about Ochoa, who was named Champion Two-Year-Old and Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding after winning the All American Futurity-G1 and finishing third in the Ruidoso Futurity-G1.
“He’s a big, nice gelding that has a lot of run left in him,” said Gilbreath. “Right now, I’ve got to say he’s about as good a horse as I’ve ever had.”
Ochoa wasn’t always so highly-regarded, as he was repurchased for only $25,000 as a yearling by breeder Johnny T.L. Jones.
“You’ve got to be a little lucky in this business. But I knew he was a good colt,” said Jones. “The horse that he was sired by was a little cool at the time, (and he was) out of an unraced mare. I told (wife) Brenda, we prob- ably need to sell him but we’re not just going to give him away. I didn’t even go out there. I said ‘If he doesn’t bring $25,000, bring him home.’ I think if they’d have bid 30, she’d still have come home with him.”
Ochoa is sired by Tres Seis, whose stud career heated up in 2011 with a Champion to his credit. Ochoa is the first starter for his dam, Stolis Fortune, who was purchased pri- vately by Julianna Hawn Holt last fall.
And when Jones’ longtime friends Monte and Katsy Cluck and Doug and Shavon Benson asked to partner on a racehorse, Jones suggested the sorrel colt.
“That’s the first racehorse they’ve ever had, and he won the All American. So it was a lot of fun,” Jones said of his partners.
All told, Ochoa won three of four races in 2011, with one third-place finish. His career earnings stand at $1,244,200.
Ochoa is currently taking a break at Gilbreath’s farm in Brock, Texas, and will be returning as a three-year-old for the rich derby schedule at Ruidoso Downs.
