SEPARATE FIRE si 96, $631,250
Champion Two-Year-Old Filly
Breeder: Steve D. Burns, DVM Owner: Tremor Enterprises, LLC Trainer: Paul Jones
Jockey: Ramon Sanchez
2011 Record: 8-5(2)-0(0)-2(0), $631,250, 1st Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, Kindergarten Futurity-G1, fnl. Golden State Million Futurity-G1
Jose and Zulema Trevino, of Tremor Enterprises, were busy working on projects at their new facility, Zule Farms, in Lexington, Oklahoma, on the day of the AQHA Champions announcements and arrived to the party late, just moments after their Separate Fire had been named Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. That didn’t diminish
their pride over the filly’s accomplishments, however, as Separate Fire earned $631,250 over a year that saw her win two Grade 1 futurities.
“It’s hard to be tough all year long. But we were able to strike early in some futurities and she qualified for the ones at the end of the year, so it was pretty impressive, I thought,” said Separate Fire’s trainer, Paul Jones.
Separate Fire was bred by Dr. Steve Burns of Menifee, California. Sired by Walk Thru Fire, she was purchased for $45,000 at the 2010 Heritage Place Yearling Sale.
The sorrel first made headlines after her gate drill of :11.80 on March 29 equaled the fastest by a two-year-old prior to a debut race at Los Alamitos. In the trials to the Kindergarten Futurity-G1, Separate Fire took a step further and faster, as she covered the distance in :15.08, the fastest ever by a two-year-old racing 300 yards at Los Alamitos. In the finals, her winning time of :15.148 was a Kindergarten stakes record.
Separate Fire returned to win the Ed Burke Million Futurity-G1, making Tremor Enterprises the first to own three winners of million-dollar races. They also won the All American Futurity with Mr Piloto and the Texas Classic Futurity with Tempting Dash.
“We’re down to the ground people, but this is a great moment and we will enjoy it,” Trevino said. “I don’t think I could pick a favorite win (among the million-dollar futurities). We feel the same for this one as we do for the other ones, but we appreciate them all. Even when you lose a race, they each give you experience and that’s what counts. If you have 10 horses in the start- ing gate, you have a 10 percent chance to win and 90 percent chance to lose. We come to the track with those percentages in mind and feel blessed whenever we win a race.”
