It’s rare that a three-year-old filly runs in the Champion of Champions. To get there, they have to win one of the few derbies that
carries a berth to the race, or duke it out in the Z. Wayne Griffin Director’s Stakes. Dashing Folly did it in 1996 and was the year’s World Champion, as was Blues Girl Too in 2007. Miss Racy Jess made it to the big show in 2011 and, while she didn’t win, her performance in the sport’s premiere race and throughout 2011 was enough to earn her the coveted title of Champion Three-Year-Old Filly.
Trained by Blane Wood and his son, Trey, Miss Racy Jess split her time between Ruidoso Downs and Los Alamitos. In New Mexico, she was unlucky to qualify for any of the major derbies. At Los Alamitos, it was a different story. The Mr Jess Perry daughter won her trial to the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 with the fastest qualifying time and returned to win the finals, securing her spot in the Champion of Champions-G1.
“We had a little hard luck last year but took her back out there (to California) and kind
of pointed at this (championship). And that’s what happened,” said co-owner Johnny Trotter, who owns Miss Racy Jess in partnership with Burnett Ranches.
Miss Racy Jess showed her championship form in the Los Alamitos Super Derby, racing to a neck victory in the Grade 1 event over such talented rivals as 2010 Champion Two- Year-Old Filly Flying Fig and One Sweet Jess.
“She’s a great, great filly. We’ve been very fortunate to get involved with her,” said Dr. Glenn Blodgett, representing Burnett Ranches at the AQHA Champions Awards. “She’s had a great career and we’re looking forward to mak- ing a great broodmare out of her.”
Like Spit Curl Diva, Miss Racy Jess’ retire- ment was officially announced at the awards ceremony on Jan. 18 at Heritage Place. The filly ends her career with a record of 6-1-1 from 11 starts, with one stakes win and earnings
of $485,113, much of which was gathered in the Los Alamitos Super Derby. Miss Racy Jess was also a finalist in the 2010 All American Futurity-G1.
