When Good Reason SA was named Champion Aged Stallion and Champion Aged Horse for 2011, he joined an elite list of horses to win both titles. Only six stallions— Dash For Cash, Azure Three, Super Sound Charge, Mr Master Bug, Special Leader and Ketel Won—have accom- plished the feat, and only two of those have been in the past two decades.
Good Reason SA earned his champion titles with spectacular showings in two of Los Alamitos’ premiere races for older horses—the Los Alamitos Winter Championship-G2 and the Champion of Champions-G1. In between, the stallion ran against the toughest older horse competition in the country in California, facing the likes of Jess You And I, Freaky, Chivalry SR, Snitcher, and others.
“It’s really hard to campaign a horse
from that time (the Los Alamitos Winter Championship on Feb. 19) all the way to now and come out victorious in this race. It’s almost amazing,” said trainer Paul Jones after the Champion of Champions, on Dec. 10. “He was so sharp then and he tapered off a little bit mid season, and then he kind of blossomed again towards the end of the year. When they taper off, usually you’re done. It’s a pretty big feat for him to come back like he did.”
Indeed, Good Reason SA’s nose victory in the Champion of Champions was the impetus that propelled him to his dual champion-
ship titles. His connections are hoping the momentum carries over to the stallion’s upcoming career at stud at Royal Vista Equine in Oklahoma.
“They tell me he’s going to be maybe even
a better breeder than he was a runner. We’re looking forward to it,” said agent Vince Genco, who handles Brazilian owner Gianni Samaja’s racing operations in the United States.
Samaja bred Good Reason SA, who is a half- brother to stakes winner Appeals Special King and stakes-placed winners Fantastic Corona Jr and Special Queen SA, among others.
Good Reason SA takes the Grade 1 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos.
