Spit Curl Diva is one of two 2010 Champions to repeat in 2011. The Champion Aged Horse and Champion Aged Mare of 2010 was once again named Champion Aged Mare in 2011, following a season that saw her win three stakes races.
Owned by the partnership of Tom Leipc and Sara Morgan, Spit Curl Diva has been the best older mare in the country for two straight years while facing the toughest competi-
tion from coast to coast. In 2011, she ran in Indiana, Oklahoma, Iowa and California, taking on the boys at every turn. And she did it all after a championship campaign in 2010 and a turn in the breeding shed in early 2011.
“We were very excited at the end of last year, and we were wondering what to do. We had heard so many times that it was tough to breed and come back and run, and Jill (Mixer, Sara’s mother) and we all got together and decided we’d go ahead and take that chance. We pulled three embryos from her—we’re going to have three babies in the next two months.”
Lepic admitted they were understandably nervous when the mare returned to the track in early summer, but they needn’t have worried. After finishing second in the Indiana Downs Classic Stakes, Spit Curl Diva promptly set a 440-yard track record at Prairie Meadows.
“We’re just blessed to have this kind of horse. It was an amazing year again, and we’re going
to retire her now,” said Lepic, adding that the decision to retire Spit Curl Diva was sealed with her second championship. “Not many mares have had the career that she’s had, and we’re
so fortunate that we’ve got some babies on the way. We’re hoping that we’ll have some young runners on the way soon. It’s hard to find a mare that can run the way she runs, and then to have some babies come back to run again, but she’s done all she can do for us. She’s going to just enjoy life in the field now, and we’ll watch the babies run beside her and be blessed that we had this opportunity. It’s been great.”
