The good news is, four-year-old sorrel gelding New News banked first place money in the Rio Grande Handicap on March 1.
Sunland Park hosted the 350-yard stakes event that carried a total purse worth $50,000. New News stepped away from the num-
ber five post with the leaders and had a bit of ground to make up.
The gelding had moved into second at the first call, and by mid stretch he was just a head back of the leader.
Jockey Jaime Leos, with steady right handed encour- agement, steered his mount into the lead and they were able to cross the finish line a head to the good.
The son of Majestic Cartel stopped the clock at :17.250 to earn a 96 speed index. He also deposited the first place winner’s share,
which was worth $30,000, taking his total earnings to $178,111.
His race record now stands at 4(2)- 3(1)-4 from 17 starts. New News also won the $210,852 West Texas Derby-G3 in 2019, and was second in that year’s Mr Jet Moore Handicap. The gelding was also a finalist in the All American Gold Cup-G1, Lovington
Stakes-G2, and Hobbs America Derby-G3.
His team includes owners Cesar Sanchez and Nathaneal Pallanes. Arturo Chavez is in charge of conditioning.
New News was bred by Bennie and Terri Jeter in Texas. The gelding is out of winner Executive Promises. The mare has produced three starters/money earners/ROM from four foals. New News is the first stakes winners and top money earner in the brood.
One Runaway Jess (One Sweet Jess-Runaway D L T) gave the field a head start and then turned in a gritty performance to pocket second place money for owner Juan Barrientos and trainer Aurelio Valdez. Porfirio Cano was in
the irons. Ganster Americano (Corona Cartel- Matabari) gave chase down the track and ended up with a third place finish. He is owned by Rivera Quarter Horse Racing and trained by Cynthia Gonzalez. Mauro Salcedo was han- dling the reins. Followed by Siximoons (First Moonflash-Stevie Six) Mystic Blues (Walk Thru Fire-Queens R Blue) Magnifico (PYC Paint Your Wagon-BP Mariahs JP) Maize N Blue (Walk Thru Fire-Queens R Blue) Frost Dalena (Chicks Regard-Forced To Win) Kis My Bit (One Famous Eagle-Bits Of Bliss) Taking The Stage (Louisiana Senator-Thirty Fourth Street). Cds Wine N Dine and Walcott were scratched.
