HAWK THE HEAD
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
This was the third stakes event on Feb. 9, and the first one of the season at the short distance of 110 yards. The race was for run- ners three years and older born in Mexico, with a prize $392,300 pesos (approximately US $20,748).
Nine sprinters were eligible, each paying $33,000 pesos (about $1,745), including the formidable Charly Cartel, who holds the track record at the distance at :6.82. So, he was favorite in the betting windows.
At the start, Seniorita Caro (#7) stumbled badly. Meanwhile at each end of the track, Charly Cartel (#1) and Hawk The Head (#9) came on strong in the race to move into the lead. Reaching the finish line was a matter of just 6.86 seconds, scored by Hawk The Head and jockey Arturo Romero for a speed index of 102. A few yards before crossing the finish line, Dancer Fishers (#8) fouled Seniorita Caro, resulting in his disqualification from third to eighth place.
In this way, the veteran 8-year-old mare Hawk The Head made a success-
ful debut in official racing. As reported by
César Rueda Escamilla,
her coach and owner, she
had been running success-
fully in competitions and
over short distances under
the name “La Casita,” in
reference to the brand of
his breeding. “It was until
I recently acquired her and
started training her that I
decided to run her at the
Hipodromo de las Americas,
where she also has her stable
now,” said Escamilla. Happy for the triumph – which is the first to be obtained in classics – César also commented that Arturo Romero has been his rider.
Raised in Sinaloa by Armando León, Hawk The Head is a daughter of Chicks Beduino Jr and out of the mare Hawk The Cash by Takin On The Cash. Her earn- ings account was upped by $196,150 pesos (approximately $10,374).
Ridden by José Manuel Cisneros, Charly Cartel (Watchful Vigilance–Chata Corona)
finished second to the win- ner by a neck for the Cuadra Díaz de León. Saddled by trainer Saúl Pérez Robredo, Charly Cartel was the win- ner of this classic in 2019.
Following the disquali- fication of Dancer Fishers, third place went to BR Bambino (Southern Corona– Regal Fortune) under the command of Alfredo Torres Amador. He belongs to the
Cuadra Bronco Rider and was saddled by trainer Luis Flores Guillén.
Also participated: Walk Thru Aguerrido (Aguerrido–Walk Thru Fire Kool), there was a deadheat for fifth place between La Primera Dama AT (Divas First Down– Alemar AC) and Sassa Corona (Southern Corona–Sassafras), followed by Seniorita Caro (Separatist–Raise A Chance), Dancer Fishers (Ze Dancer–Natalia Fishers) and Fenomenal Party (Southern Corona–
Party Wave).
