Golden State Juvenile
CHICKITITAS FAVORITE
by Tracy Gantz
When Chickititas Favorite crossed the finish line first in the $30,000 Golden State Juvenile on Nov. 3, fans of a certain age could be forgiven
for humming an ABBA song. The gelding gets his name from his stakes-placed dam, Chickitita, spelled slightly different from “Chiquitita,” the ABBA hit and part of the musical “Mamma Mia!”
Chickititas Favorite brought a record of two wins, a second, and a third in seven starts to the 400-yard Juvenile. As a result, the gelding went off as the 13-1 fifth choice in the eight-horse field. Jockey Eddie Garcia broke Chickititas Favorite out of the gate in second, and they quickly took command to win by a 1/2-length in :19.832, posting a 91 speed index.
John Cooper trains Chickititas Favorite for owners Ronald and Jeryl Hartley, who bred the gelding in California. Jeryl Hartley and John Firth claimed Chickitita for $12,500 out of her second start, with Cooper as their trainer. The mare has produced two winners in five starters, including 2018 California Breeders’ Debutante Stakes winner Hard Headed Chick.
Jairo Rangel rode Pesky (Favorite Cartel-Quirky) to second for owner Juniors Quarter Horses Inc.
and trainer Jose Flores. A son of Champion Quirky, Pesky had won once and finished third once in his two previous starts.
Bobby Cox’s homebred Ratification (Apollitical Jess-Shesa First Ratify) finished third under jockey Jose Nicasio for trainer Jaime Gomez. The filly won once in two starts at Remington Park and once in three starts at Ruidoso Downs.
Completing the field were Suite Expectations (Apollitical Jess-Just A Fairytale), Nomadic (Favorite Cartel-Moonlight Corona), Mr Ricks (Mr Jess Perry-Aquafina), Wrong Impression (Stel Corona- Fool The Boys) and El Angel Corona (Corona Czech-Special Ela).
Town Policy Stakes
JEST FAMOUS
by Tracy Gantz
Making his Los Alamitos debut, Jest Famous scored in the $25,000 Town Policy Stakes on Nov. 9. It was also his first effort for trainer
Christopher O’Dell.
Cody Jensen, who piloted Jest Famous in his
previous start at Ruidoso Downs, was back aboard for the Town Policy. Sent off as the 11-10 favorite, Jest Famous broke in third and dueled with Bos Time Machine for the lead. He defeated that rival by 1/2-length in :19.690 for 400 yards.
Jest Famous races for MRB Racing LLC.
When handled by other trainers, he won the 2018 Southwest Juvenile Championship-G1 and finished third in the 2018 Ruidoso Futurity-G1. Earlier this year, Jest Famous also ran fourth in the All American Derby-G1.
Jon and Donna McPherson bred Jest Famous in Louisiana out of Famous Corona Lady, who they raced to earnings of $184,408. Famous Corona Lady has produced three starters. Two have won and the third, Jessapolitical Guy, is a 2-year-old colt who finished third in the 2019 Turf Paradise Juvenile Challenge.
Bos Time Machine (Bodacious Dash-One Prompt Chick) finished second under jockey Carlos Huerta for owners Dee and Gary Hoovestal and trainer Paul Jones. Earlier this year, Bos Time Machine won the Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap and Catchmeinyourdreams Handicap.
Vernon Harman and Robert Moudy III’s home- bred Eagles Fly Higher (One Famous Eagle-Lone Bet) ran third. Vinnie Bednar rode the colt for trainer Justin Joiner. Eagles Fly Higher won the 2018 Remington Park Juvenile Stakes.
Rounding out the field were SC Money Maker (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Spit Curl Diva), Jess Motions (Apollitical Jess-Royal Motions) and Long Distance Call (Walk Thru Fire-Prima LD).
Corona Chick Handicap
JR PRISSYS BLOOD
by Tracy Gantz
JR Prissys Blood has had three distinctly different experiences in her three Los Alamitos starts. The third one was the charm, as she narrowly scored in the $25,000 Corona Chick Handicap on Nov. 16. Jesus Valenzuela, who rode JR Prissys Blood
at Weber Downs and Energy Downs and won the Cowboy State Futurity with her, was back aboard for the 400-yard Corona Chick. They broke out of the gate on top and led at every call, holding off Old School Icon to win by a nose in :19.910 for an 89 speed index. The $13,750 winner’s share of the purse boosted her total bankroll to $57,721.
Third in The Plan Handicap in her Los Alamitos debut, JR Prissys Blood then refused to start in the Autumn Handicap, did not finish, and walked off.
Monty Arrossa trains JR Prissys Blood for owner/ breeder J R Stables. Bred in Nevada, JR Prissys Blood is out of Prissy B Panther, a stakes winner at Los Alamitos. Prissy B Panther has produced six starters, all winners, including multiple stakes win- ner JR Dynasty Mountain.
Martha Wells’ homebred Old School Icon (Texas Icon-Cozie Fire) finished second under jockey Jorge Bourdieu for trainer Matthew Fales. The gelding finished second in this year’s The Plan Handicap and third in the Desert Classic Futurity.
Arrossa also trains Gary and Jeralyn Messenger’s homebred Zoom On Jess (Jess Zoomin-Feature Miss Fame), who finished third under jockey Armando Cervantes. Zoom On Jess won the 2019 Idaho Cup Futurity and The Plan Handicap and finished third in the Los Alamitos Wild West Futurity.
Completing the field were John Carter Cash (Carters Cartel-One Fast Trick), Royally Significant (Good Reason SA-Significant Heart), CM Singing The Blues (Inseperable-Cool Blue Corona) and Kick It Papa Joe (One Sweet Jess-Fire In The Curl).
