                Mexican Breeding Challenge Futurity
MALEFICO CARTEL
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
With 90 participants, the trials races
for the Mexican Breeding Challenge Futurity were held on Oct. 20. The race has quickly become important in the competition program for two-year-old runners raised in Mexico. Among the fastest ten, we found some individuals that had not participated in previ- ous futurities, but there was no surprise in the final result.
A total of 4,353,400 pesos (approx. US $225,762) was the purse to be distributed according to their order of arrival at the finish line. The distance of the race was 350 yards.
Once again, Rancho El Suspiro was run- ning as a firm contender to win this futurity – qualifying four finalists, with two of them having the top times. In the recent Select Auction Futurity, they had five return to the finals, forming the duo of Rex Sambaso and Chispita Two, who was absent for this event due to being disqualified in her trial. Because of this, the “Chiapaneco” entry (alluding to their home State of Chiapas) closed with odds of 0.10 to win, where the main attraction was the grey gelding Rex Sambaso and the sorrel gelding Malefico Cartel.
The race were carried out cleanly, with those mentioned above leading the action with speed and opportunity. Bordering the internal rail, Rex Sambaso moved with agility, while very close to the opposite rail, Malefico Cartel did the same, true to his habit of deviating to the right, this time with no effect as he was
on the outside. It was a friendly competition, to which Jabulani Dash (#3) and RG Onchao A King (#6) joined. However, the power of Malefico Cartel was noted in the final yards
as he managed to overcome Rex Sambaso by 3/4-length, who did the same over RG Onchao A King for a head’s difference, and this former runner to Jabulani Dash for just over 1-length.
The winner’s time was :16.93, improv- ing his :17.05 trial clocking and equivalent to a speed index of 98. Malefico Cartel was ridden by Leonardo Vidaña. The excitement for the triumph was overshadowed by two accidents near the curve of the track: one
as a result of a fracture suffered by Princesa Cartel, owned by Rancho El Suspiro, which made it necessary to euthanize her; and another for the fall of RG Onchao A King and his rider Victor Monterrosas, where they were hit by the horse behind them, requiring emergency medical intervention. Fortunately, the two are out of danger.
Juan Baldovinos Jr., owner of the winning horse, and Dr. Anselmo Aguilar, the breeder, received him and went to the winner’s circle where José Guadalupe “Lupillo” García, who is responsible for his
daily preparation, and trainer Ismael Ayala Salas, who saddled him for this important commitment, celebrated along with family and friends.
It was an expected tri-
umph for this gelding; a son of Danny Cartel and out of La Chuchena (by This Snow Is Royal), a pedigree of proven qualities. This
is his fifth victory, along with a second place in the Garañones Futurity from 7 starts, and added $1,828,428 pesos (approximately US $94,820) to his earnings account, which totals more than 3.2 million pesos.
Thus, Rancho El Suspiro won this futurity after also winning the Selecta Auction Futurity on Sept. 15 with Rex Sambaso, the most impor- tant one for Mexican Quarter Horse racers at the Hipodromo de las Americas. In both tourna- ments, they also took the prize for second place.
A product of the last crop of Sambaso Dancer out of the mare The Answer Lady (by Corona Cartel), Rex Sambaso crossed in
second place guided by the experienced Eddi Cuéllar.
As already mentioned, he is owned by Rancho El Suspiro and saddled by trainer Ismael Ayala Salas. His breeder is Everardo Múzquiz Elguezábal and, with the earnings of
this race, exceeds 4.5 million pesos, the highest figure in the current season.
In third place was the hard-hitting sorrel RG
Onchao A King, the first son of the stallion RG Golden King and out the mare Corona Lady Dos (by Sambaso Dancer) under the support of Victor Monterrosas Cerezo. He was raised by Gabriela Cárdenas Atlixqueño and is owned by Rancho Las Gaviotas. His qualification time was :17.24. He was third in the finals of the Select Auction Futurity.
The final arrival was completed in the fol- lowing order: Jabulani Dash (Jabulani–SF Finita Dash), Princesa Cartel (Danny Cartel–Tenacious Fire), SA Hungry For Fly (TF Rowdy Lil Perry– Sabrinas Sovereign), Bourbon Eagle SA (Jabuti Eagle–Bourbon Street Dolly), Corona Sola (Senior Solo–Corona Dot Com), Corona Sheeza (Danny Cartel–Latina Sheeza) and El Beduino Cartel (Danny Cartel–Beduina Aguerrida).
