by John Moorehouse
“I would like to see the state commissions work together to have a uniform set of rules.”
      John Moorehouse
Sheri Miller has been around horses and livestock her entire life. A native of Michigan whose family
ran a livestock ranch, she went to horse shows in her youth, then started attending rodeos. Before she ever got into the world of Quarter Horse racing as an owner and trainer, Miller spent 25 years as a barrel rider in rodeos. All that time in the saddle gave her a firsthand look at what made for a good racehorse. “A lot of my barrel prospects came off the track,” she said.
Miller has parlayed that into a boatload of suc- cess in Quarter Horse racing, especially in the state of Indiana. A stallion she co-owns with Bobby Cox, Escondido Beach, has won Indiana sire awards and one of Escondido Beach’s progeny, Beach Cartel, the top earner for Miller, has produced more than $366,000 in prize money including a trio of stakes wins, all in—you guessed it—Indiana.
Miller started her breeding organization when she bought several of her broodmares from Cox,
for whom, she was training on a frequent basis. She transitioned to the role of full-time breeder/owner in the spring of 2013, after her husband had a heart
attack, and has won several breeder and owner titles. Miller is passing on her knowledge to the next
generation. Her daughter, Katie, is following in her mother’s footsteps, currently competing in shows on a regular basis.
We get to know more about Miller in the latest installment of The Lighter Side.
Q: What are your hobbies outside of horse racing?
A: My hobbies are hauling my daughter to compete in horse, goat and cattle shows.
Q: What is your favorite movie, and why?
A: “Electric Horseman.” I like it when Robert Redford rides off the Vegas strip with a prized racing stallion, who he thinks is being abused, and turns him loose with wild horses.
Q: Give an interesting fact about
your family.
A: My Dad is an accomplished drag racer at the age of 76 and still drives his own car. He also co-owns a livestock business that I work for, as well.
