KR HI FIVE
By Tracy Gantz
Sally Kidd and her son David of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, have developed KR Hi Five’s family through many generations. The homebred gelding gave them
their first futurity victory when he captured the Oct. 28 Wild West Futurity and first graded win in the Nov. 17 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2.
“I thought it was a great race,” said David. “We were wor- ried about Jess Send It the whole time and worried about coming out of the 1-hole. But he’d had some success there three races prior, and it worked out.”
Trained by Jaime Gomez
and the slight favorite over Jess Send It at 7-5, Colorado-bred KR Hi Five came out of the one hole smoothly under jockey Jose Nicasio in the Juvenile Challenge Championship. He sped to the lead and sailed home by 3/4-length, stop- ping the timer in :17.670.
“We’ve had the family back to the great-great granddam,” said David. “We’ve owned the whole family, from Rainbows
Comeandgo (the fourth dam) to Kirks Fizzbomb (the third dam).”
They sold Fizzez Show Girl, the second dam, who has produced good barrel horses, including the filly I Bee Phia. Racing for Sally,
I Bee Phia didn’t win, but
she ran second in the 2006 Cherry Creek Futurity-RG3. I Bee Phia has since produced four winners from six starters, including Mexican stakes- placed KR Galloping Ghost.
David said that they have a weanling filly by Ivory James out of I Bee Phia, with foals by Ivory James and Hes Relentless due in 2019.
Cesar DeAlba rode Stevieb Flashofcash (First Moonflash-Lds Good Goin Gracie) to second for trainer Monty Arrossa and
owner Five Livestock Company LLC. Stevieb Flashofcash finished third in the John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge.
Paul Jones trains both Jess Send It (Corona Cartel-Jess Send Me) and Allyson Wonderland (Apollitical Jess-Just A Fairytale), who dead-heated for third. Ramon Sanchez rode Jess Send It for owner Keith Nellesen, and Jesus Ayala rode Allyson Wonderland for owner-breeder Blaine Bateman. Jess Send It won the Hadley/Giles Memorial Futurity at Weber Downs. Allyson Wonderland finished second in The Plan Handicap.
Completing the field were Singles Cruise (Favorite Cartel-Going Single), Loan Sharky (Parsons Rock-Lil Sharky), Chasin Harm (Hawkinson-Yr Brown Lucy), Maghelene (One Famous Eagle-Belle Helene), and Fames Prize Stone (First Prize Stone-Go For Fame). Capitol Grille was scratched.
