                                Mexican Breeders Derby
ZE DANCER ARANDAS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
The qualifying races for the Mexican Breeders Derby were held on Sept. 30, with the participation of 3 year olds born in Mexico that ran and/or paid the respective Futurity fees. This is the only test for Mexican bred runners at 440 yards, consisting of those that obtained the best 10 times from the trials, of note being the colt Ze Dancer Arandas, who ran the fast- est qualifying time in :21.408.
The total prize was $829,450 pesos (approx. $42,893 US), to be distributed among all the finalists in decreasing proportion according to the position of finish.
There was great excitement with the pres- ence of the streaking colt of Cuadra Hacienda Vieja and his attempt to conquer this Derby, which would be his fourth Classic of the year and fifth of his career. However, doubts arose that the colt would not recover in two weeks from an injury to one of his front legs he received in his trial race.
Despite those doubts, José Hernández, a member of the Cuadra Hacienda Vieja team, published in a well-known social network: “I’m sorry, gentlemen, but you’ll only be see- ing Ze Dancer Arandas at the starting gates, because once the doors open, Adiós!” Similar confidence was expressed by the colt’s trainer Epifanio Carrasco.
Those words were prophetic, as he had the
fastest exit of the group, staying ahead as he reached
the goal under José Manuel Cisneros, crossing the wire
1 1/2-lengths in front of the filly R Quick, who closed
in second place. Ze Dancer Arandas stopped the timer in :21.08 for a 109 speed index, the highest he has obtained in his career and also just :0.07 from equaling the track record.
The main members of Cuadra Hacienda Vieja participated in the awards for the colt, capping off a second season as a successful run- ner and surpassing the sporting achievements of his sire Ze Dancer.
Initially, it was said that his next start would be in the Champion of Champions Classic next December, but that version was later rectified by José Hernández, stating that the colt will undergo surgery and, depending on the result, return to the track or retire to stand as a stallion.
For this race, Ze Dancer Arandas added $348,369 pesos (approx. $18,015 US) to his bankroll that now totals more than
3.4 million pesos and his record includes 14 wins, two seconds and a third place. He finished in the money in each of his 17 starts. He is the winner
of the Futurity and now Mexican Breeders Derby,
of the Derbys México and Subasta Selecta, as well as the Anselmo Aguilar Payán Classic. In his beginnings as a 2 year old, the consolation
of the Mexico Futurity and Selecta Auction were also accredited (by disqualification of King Of Kings).
We will see what the future brings for Ze Dancer Arandas. There is great anticipation in seeing him as a stallion and to transmit the genetic legacy he received from his sire, multiple Champion Ze Dancer, and his dam Arandas Andy, by Andy Sixes.
Sired by Trick On The Run and out of FF Quick, the grey filly R Quick was left with sec- ond place under the command of Juan Carlos García Maya. She is owned by Cuadra Casa Blanca and was saddled by Marlon Abraham Quezada Colunga. She is of Rancho Hacienda Santiago’s breeding.
