Mexican Bred Desafio Futurity
AS MACHO
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
AS Macho caught all attention during the 2018 season at the Hipódromo de las Américas. After four successful wins in futuri- ties reserved for Mexican breds auctioned in 2017, the gelding has earned the most money in the history of the Hipodromo de las Americas. Merits that will surely be recognized in the des- ignation of the championships that will soon be announced.
His triumph in the Mexican Bred Desafio Futurity on Nov. 11 confirmed his ability as a runner, along with the excellent training he receives and the leadership of his rider, as well as his breeding.
AS Macho won his trial on Oct. 21 where he set the fastest qualifying time of :17.16 for 350 yards from 71 participants. The gelding also was the fastest qualifier in the Mexico (where 206 ran) and the Garañones (with 210 participants) Futurities, while in the Selecta Auction Futurity he was the second best among 150 applicants, only surpassed by BR Bambino.
The runners who arrive at this moment of the season are already very tested. In the finals of the Mexico and Selecta Auction Futurities, AS Macho ran against One Rainbow and LA Rapid King Judea, both of whom sent him to second place by a nose difference. This time, it was a final among eight of the ten qualified due to the scratching of RG Black Diamond and Danny Cool. The filly One Rainbow broke from the inner rail next to AS Macho. At the center of the group, Crisp Horse and
LA Rapid King Judea hit Gato Mexicano and impeded him. The race highlighted the impressive stride of the sorrel AS Macho, who was
in front of the group in a few yards with the assistance of his longtime rider José Ángel Ambrosio Medina. Dancer Chimpa advanced strongly through the center of the track with Bye Bye Mom on the outside.
AS Macho crossed the wire 3/4-lengths ahead of Dancer Chimpa, who in turn surpassed Bye Bye Mom by equal margin. He exhausted the distance in :17.20 for a 98 speed index.
After reviewing the race, the judges disqualified LA Rapid King Judea and Crisp Horse for interfering with Gato Mexicano at the start of the race.
The award was given to the two-year-old gelding. This race, which ended the 2018 season and brought a with a well-deserved rest, raised expectations for the Derbies that begin in Feb. 2019.
AS Macho has seven wins and two second place finishes from nine starts. With the excep- tion of his maiden, which he won by 2-lengths on March 25, all his other appearances were in trials and finals of futurities reserved for colts and fillies bred in Mexico.
The total purse for this race was 3,833,550 pesos (approx. US $189,144), of which $1,610,091 pesos (approx. US $79,440) were paid to AS Macho (California Cartel-Check This Star
Out, Check Him Out), who was bred by Arturo A. Siller Berain and is owned by Cuadra Falcón. For this com- mitment, he was saddled by Víctor Jarillo Sánchez.
With this award, AS Macho is positioned as the highest money earner of all-time in the Hipodromo de las Américas, totaling $5,051,697 pesos in a single season.
Always constant in his performance, the colt Dancer Chimpa (Ze Dancer-Macumba Royal Hemp) was second place under José Manuel Cisneros for Cuadra Díaz de León and trainer Juan Miguel Cruz Galván. The colt was bred by Félix Bañuelos’ breeding. He was third in the finals of the Selecta Auction Futurity and is the official winner of the Consolation of Futurity Garañones by disqualification of RG Black Diamond.
In third place was Bye Bye Mom (Fearless Fritz-Warm Secret) who was ridden by Alejandro Gómez Díaz. The gelding is owned by Cuadra El Capricho of Las Águilas, trained by Manuel Celedón Basulto and bred by MVZ Rachuán Suárez Kuri.
