Idaho Voters Turn Down Historical Racing Terminals
Idahoans voted down Proposition 1, which would have reauthorized the use of historical horse racing terminals in an attempt to save Idaho’s faltering horse-racing industry. Only 278,092, or 46.2%, of voters statewide sup- ported the measure, compared to 323,732 and 53.8% who voted against it.
AHP Student Award Contest
The American Horse Publications (AHP) Student Award program began in 1983 to pro- mote awareness to students of the career oppor- tunities available in equine publishing. This
year, the AHP One Travel Award contest will award up to three $1,000 travel awards to college students to attend the AHP Annual Equine Media Conference on May 30-June 1, 2019 in Albuquerque, NM. Film Based on Healing Power of Horse-Therapy Set for Release
Unbridled will open in select theaters nationwide on Jan. 18, 2019. The film is an uplifting story of overcoming life’s obstacles about an abused girl who teams up with an abused horse on a journey of healing. The film is inspired by the equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP) program of the Corral Riding Academy in Cary, NC, which helps abused girls heal by pairing them with rehabilitated horses.
Paul Howard Passes Away
Owner/trainer Paul Howard passed away on Oct. 22 at the age of 77. Some of his major victories as an owner included winning the 1978 All American Futurity with Moon Lark. Howard is survived by his wife Susan, along with many other family members and friends.
Johnny T.L. Jones Passes Away
Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame member Johnny T.L. Jones passed away on Nov. 16. Jones was a prominent member of the Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred industries in many capacities, as a trainer, breeder, owner, and was the head of Walmac International from 1976
to 2005. Jones bred and co-owned Ochoa in
the name of J Bar 7 Ranch LLC. A 4-time Champion with $2,781,365 in earnings and AQHA’s all-time leading money earner, Ochoa won the 2011 All American Futurity-G1 and three additional Grade 1 stakes. Jones was also involved with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Favorite Trick, the 1997 Horse of the Year whose breeding rights had been purchased by Walmac.
Luke Myles Passes Away
Prominent rider Luke Myles passed away on Nov. 11 at the age of 67. Between 1971 and 1995, Myles rode multiple horses in top races, including in the All American Futurity and Champion of Champions. Myles is survived by his daughter Mandy, son Luke Myles III, and many other family members and friends.
Indiana Grand Meet Leaders
Indiana Grand Racing & Casino ended its 2018 meet on Nov. 7. Ricardo Martinez was named leading owner with 10 wins in 31 starts and earnings of $190,000. In addition to topping the owner standings, Martinez finished third in the leading Quarter Horse trainer standings. Randy Smith took the leading trainer title with 38 wins and over $950,000 in earnings. In another great sea- son, Jose Beltran was named leading jockey with 30 wins in 146 starts and more than $652,000 in earnings. Beltran won races such as the Miss Roxie Little Futurity with Dominyun Cartel and the Blue River Derby with Rockys Candy Shop.
