The photo on page 221 shows Champion Aged Stallion Don Guerro (War Chic-Donetta, Don Bar) with Hall of Fame jockey Robert Adair and trainer Dan Francisco after winning the third running of the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in 1974. The 1970 sorrel stallion also won the Golden State Derby, HQHRA Inaugural Handicap, Double Bid Handicap, and Auld Land Syne Handicap in his race career.
Don Guerro was bred and owned by actor and director Robert Mitchum’s Belmont Farms. “One of the merits of a ‘brave’ horse must surely be his inspiration and loyalty,” Mitchum once told Nelson C. Nye for Speedhorse.
Mitchum decided to get into Quarter Horse racing and when Don Guerro was foaled, he was overlooked by some, “for his apparent lack of precocity. I feel he compensated for this with trust and an ability to learn quickly as well as that controlled agility which, to me, suggested great power.”
So, Mitchum sent the colt off to be broke. Don Guerro returned with a report that he would gallop all day long, but wouldn’t run. Mitchum didn’t lose faith in his colt, however, believing he would do whatever he was asked if he was just shown the way. And he was right.
In his five years of racing, Don Guerro earned $171,869 with a race record of 35-9(5)-7(4)-4(2). Don Guerro was named 1974 Champion Aged Stallion after winning three major stakes races against the major heavyweights of the day.
In his 1974 Champion of Champions victory, Don Guerro was nowhere near the favorite of the field. He was up against then all-time leading money earner Timeto Thinkrich; Charger Bar, who was on a 12-race win streak; and many other top runners.
The stud career of Don Guerro was not as prolific as his race career. Don Guerro sired 29 winners and multiple stakes winners with just over $350,000 in earnings, including 2-time stakes winner Donaero, who set two New Track Records.
This year’s $600,000 Champion of Champions-G1 was won by Bodacious Eagle at Los Alamitos on Dec. 15.
