winner. He had nine starts this year with
two wins, four seconds and two thirds. He was stakes placed in three races and finished fourth in another stakes race. His third stakes placed effort was a second in the Victoria Ennis Memorial at Remington Park. He earned $87,642 for the year.
Vaughan explained how he came to run Admiral Tom. “I had six trainers come look
at him and nobody wanted to give me what I wanted for him, so I decided to run him myself. I v him in the yearling pasture and he pretty much told me he was going to be a runner and he is. I will run him next year as a derby horse.”
Vaughan then went on to tell how he came to be involved in racing. “I got into racing through my uncle and some friends back in the 70’s. One of my buddies and I started partnering on some running horses. We didn’t have a lot of money and didn’t know much and I was about to start college, but I have now been racing and breeding horses for 40 years. I’m a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Appaloosa Horse Club.”
Like many in the industry, his involvement has grown. “I’ve always been into Quarter Horses and I still raise Quarter Horses and I have several nice mares, including two stakes producing Quarter Horse mares, although we did lose one of those mares this year.” Vaughan stated.
Whirling Fastball, a 1989 stallion bred by Robert J. Hurst of Los Fresnos, Texas, is one
of the Quarter Horses raced by the Vaughan Brothers. He was purchased in 1989 by Mike Vaughan and raced under the Wishbone Partnership. He is by Lord Lark, a son of the 1978 All American Futurity winner Moon Lark. His dam is Whirling Six by Easy Six by Easy Jet.
Whirling Fastball earned $119,321
and was the winner of the 1991 Bandera Futurity-G2 and the Gold Rush Futurity. He was fourth in the Heritage Place Futurity-G1, second in the 1992 Special Effort Stakes
and a finalist in both the Remington Park Derby-G1 and the Heritage Place Derby-G1 that same year.
Whirling Fastball is a million dollar sire with earners of over $1.4 million. His leading earner is 6-time stakes winner Streakin Screwball, winner of the 1998 Speedhorse Gold & Silver Cup Futurity-RG3, the 1999 Oklahoma Bred Derby-RG3 and the 2000 Governor’s Cup Handicap at Blue Ribbon Downs.
Vaughan explained about how Appaloosas came into his program. “I got into Appaloosas over 20 years ago. My brother and I raised Whirling Fastball, which turned out to be a good Oklahoma bred sire. We ran him as a partnership. He was a real good horse.
