  Desert Classic Futurity

Running in Arizona appears to suit Lighting Regard. K.H. Logax Inc.’s homebred geld- ing charged to his second win in as many starts
in the Grand Canyon State. After posting the top qualifying time in trials for the Desert Classic Futurity, he came on strong to rally for victory in the $85,505 stakes race, held May 4 at Turf Paradise.
Lighting Regard now has two wins in three outs, and the $41,753 payday
for this stakes win increased
his bankroll to $45,402.
Trained by Armando Castellanos, Lighting Regard led all qualifiers trying to crack the Desert Classic field by completing his 300-yard trial in :15.809 to claim the top spot. The gelding didn’t surpass that time, but his :15.856 in the futurity still proved good enough to get him to the winner’s circle.
Lighting Regard actually got caught up
in traffic emerging from the No. 7 gate, but jockey Hector Aldrete kept the gelding on course while El Piojito Afternoon and La Perrita De Anya rode their inside starting posi- tions to the front of the field. Lighting Regard began to make his move at approximately the midpoint of the race, charging up the track and reaching the wire first by a half-length.
Lighting Regard clocked an 88 speed index while becoming the third stakes winner foaled by his dam, Uncovered Streaker. The 1990 mare’s offspring include stakes winners Uncovered Regard and Chicks Streaker. Uncovered Regard and Lighting Regard are full brothers, while Chicks Streaker was sired by Totally Done Gone. In total, Uncovered Streaker has 12
foals, nine starters and six winners.
Madd Dog (Dog Daze Afternoon-Merri
Roc), a gelding bred by owners Ralph and Carolyn Fales, prevailed in a three-way photo for second place. The Matthew Fales trainee had Tony Guymon aboard. Kicking Horse (A Regal Choice-Ladies Boots) hit the board third for owner/trainer Elroy Mendoza. Lorenzo Lopez drew the riding assignment.
The remaining order of finish was Black Storm Regard (Chicks Regard-Miss Quick Houston), La Perrita De Anya (Dog Daze Afternoon-Countess Anya), Corona For Everybody (Corona For Me-Blushing Dale), Jessiana (Jesse James Jr-Oriana’s Magic TB), Tres Seis And Jac (Tres Seis-Blushing Heart), El Piojito Afternoon (Dog Daze Afternoon- Glitter For Corona) and Jessa Secret (Dejon- Secret Return).

marathon Quarter horse and Thoroughbred handicap
ALL ABouT LARRy
by Tracy Gantz
it really was All About Larry in the May 6 Marathon Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Handicap at SunRay Park. Though the 5-year-
old gelding had not yet won a stakes, he made it look easy when he finally got that first black type win in the $50,000 event.
Drawn on the outside of the 870-yard Marathon, All About Larry scooted immedi- ately to the lead. Valentino De Lao rushed up on the inside to challenge
him, and the two raced
together. Midway on the
turn, All About Larry inched
away by a half-length, and
while Valentino De Lao
stayed close till midstretch,
in the final yards, All About
Larry pulled away. Jockey
L.S. Martinez brought him
home by 3 1/4 lengths in a
winning time of :45.114.
Prior to this year, All About Larry had raced
exclusively in his native Arizona. There, on Dec. 30, 2011, he set a track record at Turf Paradise for 870 yards in :44.304 in the $7,500 Best of Breeds 870 Stakes, which
did not qualify for black type as it did not meet AQHA’s $15,000 purse requirement for stakes races. After one more victory at Turf Paradise in January, All About Larry moved
(Apollo-TB-JJs First Feature), who finished second with Oscar Ortega aboard, most recently had run second in the Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge. Carlos Sedillo trains the 4-year-old gelding for owner Tony Carnes.
Git Er Done (Holland Ease-Queen Of Everything) finished third in the stakes, his 50th lifetime start. Enrique Gomez rode the 9-year-old gelding for owner-trainer Martin Orona Sr. Git Er Done’s 14 wins include the 2011 Herman Jefferson Stakes-G3 and last year’s Marathon.
Completing the field were KC Royal Flush (Sixes Royal-Willie May Dash), JW A Royal Flirt (GW A Royal Chick-Office Wench-TB), Apollos First Down (Apollo-TB-Ms Devine Diva), Bullets Brother (Real Runaway- Alexanders Lady Luck), and Coronas Boy (Mr Houston-My First Corona).
to New Mexico,
where he won his trial for the Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge-G3 and finished fifth in the final.
John Stinebaugh trains All About Larry for owner Diane Heath. The Las Vegas Ranch bred him from Come Hell Or Hiwater, a winner of one in nine races. Come Hell Or Hiwater has produced two starters—All About Larry and multiple stakes winner A Splash Of Hell.
