nowurtalkin became a stakes winner in two countries when he won the May 5 Sam Houston Classic-G2. The 4-year-old colt made
a name for himself first in Mexico, where he won five stakes, before heading to Sam Houston Race Park.
Off a bit slowly in the 440-yard Classic, Nowurtalkin veered in slightly from post two before jockey Rodrigo Vallejo straightened him out. From there, the colt was
all business, pulling alongside
Charal Kid on the rail while
Giorgino ranged up on the
outside. The three battled to
the wire, but Nowurtalkin
pulled away to win by a half-
length in :21.771.
Jose Luis Salazar of Laredo, Texas, owns Nowurtalkin and sent him to trainer Judd Kearl for the Classic. Kearl is the leading trainer at the current Sam
Houston meet, and he won the 2010 Classic with Comin Thru. The trainer breezed Nowurtalkin after the colt came out of quar- antine and liked what he saw.
In Mexico, Nowurtalkin won seven of nine races and finished second in the other two. Last year in that country, he won the Derby Mexicano, Clasico Easily A Possum, Clasico AMCCCM, and Clasico Campeon
de Campeones. This past January he captured the Clasico Inaugural-Division 2.
Jack W. Evans Jr. bred Nowurtalkin in Texas from the unraced Thoroughbred mare Illusive Star. The mare, a half-sister to stakes winners Illusive Ghost, Darling Dixie, and Slewance, has one starter, a non-winner, from her three reported Thoroughbred foals.
Malinche Cattle Co. Inc.’s homebred Charal Kid
(Streakin La Jolla-The Special Feature) finished second for jockey Jorge Linares and trainer Eusevio Huitron. The 6-year-old gelding has won 10 stakes, including this year’s Streakin La Jolla Stakes at Louisiana Downs.
Santos Carrizales piloted Giorgino (Apollo- TB-Las Alamitos) to third for Jorge Haddad, the colt’s owner, breeder, and trainer. Winner of the 2010 Sunland Park Winter Futurity-G2, Giogino recently finished second in the Bank of America Sam Houston Championship Challenge-G1.
Completing the field were First Klas Fred (Fredricksburg-She Flies First Klas), Shineys Magic T (Dreams Work-Oh My Shesa Dream), Executive Prince (Executive Menace-Sticky
N Picky), Ja Jess Perfect (Mr Jess Perry-Ja Curiosity), Sophisticated Snow (This Snow Is Royal-Sophisticated Sign), and Winners Ignition (Winners Award-Special Ignition).

Pot o’ Gold Futurity
one FAmous sTRAwFLy
by Tracy Gantz
Two-year-olds early in the season are cer- tainly prone to running less than straight. That’s just what happened in the May 6 Pot O’ Gold Futurity at Sun Downs. Jess Be Hawkin finished first, but her erratic course cost
her the race and One Famous Strawfly was declared the winner.
When the gate opened for the 300-yard Futurity, Jess Be Hawkin broke inward from post four into Rumors R
Flying. That set off a chain
reaction the resulted in
Rogue County losing his
rider. One Famous Strawfly
to the outside of Jess Be
Hawkin flew to the lead, but
jockey Hugo Herrera was
able to straighten out Jess Be
Hawkin. They outfinished
One Famous Strawfly and
Paul Greene by a neck.
The stewards disqualified Jess Be Hawkin and placed

her last. They elevated One Famous Strawfly to first, giving the filly her first victory. She had finished third in her racing debut, her Pot O’ Gold trial, and was the 10th-fastest quali- fier. Jess Be Hawkin had qualified the fastest and was made the 8-5 favorite for the final.
Burnett Ranches LLC bred One Famous Strawfly, a daughter of the stallion One Famous Eagle, in Texas. Hector Magallanes
trains the filly for his father, Ruben, who owns her. The dam, winner Strawfly Lady, has two starters, the other also a 2-year-old, the placed gelding Captain Strawfly, by Captain Courage. Strawfly Lady has a third 2-year-old, the First Down Dash filly First Down Six, but she has not yet started.
Cartel Madam (Corona Cartel-Jess Maganette), who finished third under jockey
One Famous Strawfly (right) was placed first.
Ashley Zacherle, was elevated to second
upon the disqualification of Jess Be Hawkin. Benito Curiel trains the filly for owner Malon Cowgill.
Never Marin piloted Fannies Corona (Southern Corona-Ima Flyn First Class) to fourth, and they were moved up to third. Maxine Carruthers owns the filly, and Janis Schoepf trains her.
The rest of the official order of finish was Lethal Bullet (Strong Hope-Shez Lethal), Sollovino (Fastnfierce-Red Hot Diva), BG I Came I Saw Iwon (First Thoughts-Antonios Shorts), Rumors R Flyin (First Thoughts-Easy Rumors), Mr Foxy Zoom (Foxy Tejon-Hope Too Zoom), Rogue County (Kipas Special- Royal Stakes Quick), and Jess Be Hawkin (Fly Jess Fly-Livid).
