alma and Jose Chavez bought one horse, thinking they could have some fun with her. Jose’s brother, Sacramento, trains race- horses outside of Chicago and races primarily in Florida and Indiana, so they thought they might win a minor race or two with Fetching Beauty if they got lucky.
Instead, they hit the big time, as Fetching Beauty captured the $325,000 Oklahoma Futurity-G2 at Remington Park on March 23.
The Chavezes had made Fetching Beauty eligible to the Oklahoma Futurity early on. When Sacramento saw how well Fetching Beauty was training, he urged them to keep making the sustaining payments.
“She has a lot of courage, and she doesn’t like to be behind horses,” said Sacramento. At the start of the final, Sassy Spit Curl
broke from post seven and veered out slightly as JJ Hitman took the lead. When One Valiant Hero on the outside came in a bit, it tightened things up for Fetching Beauty in post eight.
Fetching Beauty, under jockey Victor Olivo, however, quickly outran One Valiant Hero, giving her room to maneuver. She made up ground steadily and grabbed a narrow lead
about three strides from the wire to win by a half-length in :15.279 for the 300 yards.
“She did a great job,” said Sacramento. “I knew she was going to run faster in the final because most horses
are very tired the next day
after you race them. But she didn’t look tired at all after
her trial, so I knew she hadn’t given everything she had. It
was her first race, and she
didn’t know exactly what to do.”
In her trial, Fetching Beauty broke fifth and closed to finish second by just a nose. That effort got her into the final as the ninth-fastest qualifier.
Sacramento, who decided to train horses after first owning an electrical company, cur- rently trains about 12 horses and owns half of them. He helped his brother and sister-in-law buy Fetching Beauty as a yearling.
“My brother likes horses too, and he said he wanted to buy a horse for their three kids,” said Sacramento. “I suggested that they could buy a horse for racing, and if he wasn’t good enough,
he could be a riding horse.” Sacramento gave Jose some
suggestions from the 2012 Heritage Place yearling sale cat- alog. Jose didn’t want to spend more than about $6,000 for the horse, and most of Sacramento’s suggestions brought far more money than that.
Fetching Beauty was the last horse in the catalog of Sacramento’s suggestions. With their friend Jose Garcia
bidding for them, they bought her for $5,800. She races in Alma Chavez’s name.
“I took her to Hialeah in Florida and trained her,” said Sacramento, “and then we had some friends in Dallas who had her for over a month.”
The filly has traveled extensively. John Andreini and Vince Genco bred her in California and sold her in Oklahoma. She shipped to Sacramento Chavez in Illinois before he took her to Florida, Texas, and then back to Oklahoma for the race.
“She’s very gentle and likes to be touched a lot,” said Sacramento. “She’s a good horse with the kids.”
