                                Frances Loiseau
January 19, 1924 - August 26, 2015
Frances Loiseau passed away on Aug. 26 in South Dakota at the age of 91. Frances was born in Frandreau, South Dakota, and graduated from Egan High School in 1941. She worked for the telephone company in Sioux Falls and then received her teaching certificate from Sioux Falls College and taught at Faris Country School. She met James Michael Loiseau and they married in 1947. They lived and farmed at Evergreen Stock Farm in Egan, South Dakota, and together they created a legacy in the barrel racing world with horses bearing the “Frenchman” name in honor of the Loiseau heritage.
Over 50 years ago in the early 1960’s, James and Frances purchased a two-year-old dun
filly for a little over $700 at a sale in Slayton, Minnesota. The gentle filly, whose name
was Casey’s Ladylove, became the founda- tion mare of the Loiseau breeding program, producing 15 foals in her lifetime. Of those, five went to the racetrack. Four were winners and earned their Register of Merit. One was stakes winner Frenchman’s Fox, who took the South Dakota Bred Derby, was 2nd in the South Dakota Bred Futurity, and 3rd in the Cornhusker Championship. Casey’s Ladylove
also produced Love A Lord, who was the Reserve World Champion Youth Barrel Racer in 2001. And, Casey’s Ladylove was the dam of Caseys Charm, who produced many top barrel horses herself including 4-time WPRA World Champion French Flash Hawk (“Bozo”).
But perhaps the most important foal Casey’s Ladylove produced for the Loiseau’s was a filly by the name of Frenchman’s Lady. This filly had no official starts on the flat track or in the arena, but in 1987 she foaled a palomino colt by the name of Frenchmans Guy. This stallion went on to become the #1 leading living sire of barrel money earners of more than $5.5 million (as of Sept. 2015).
Frances and James Loiseau began a legacy with a breeding program that stemmed from their mare Casey’s Ladylove. From such humble beginnings, this legacy has influenced the barrel racing world more than they could have ever imagined.
Frances received the Friend of the Fair Award in 1999 and the Friend of 4-H Award in 2009. She was named the South Dakota Horse Council Horseperson of the Year in 2007 and was a Lassos and Legends Honoree in 2009. Frances was laid to rest with a horseback
funeral procession in which many of her friends lined the road with hats off and heads bowed. She was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by eight children, 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and numerous other family members.
