FIREWATERONTHEROCKS

Robyn Herring with Firewaterontherocks, whom she bred and owns
Every horse owner has a personal story about how he or she got involved with horses. Some people grew up in a family
that lived and worked on a ranch or farm with horses as a way of life. Mom and Dad owned horses, so they did the same thing
- becoming successful riders, trainers, own- ers and breeders.
Some people didn’t have a direct tie
to the horse industry and they found
their way through the pure love of the horse and a desire to be a part of the
horse industry. Robyn Herring of R & R Performance Horses is one of those people whose family had never had horses. But, with the early support of her parents, Robyn is now a seasoned owner, exhibitor, trainer and breeder of top barrel racing horses. She is also the owner and breeder of the seasoned barrel horse and top sire Firewaterontherocks.
The story of Robyn and Firewaterontherocks begins this way: “Neither of my parents knew anything about horses,” she said. “However, they were like many parents and they bought me a Shetland Pony - and that is where it all began.”
She continued about how her horse activities grew. “I just graduated from that pony and my interest built as I went on.
I did the typical things like play days and
then I got more competitive in the sense that I wanted to compete. So, I started doing youth rodeos and high school rodeos, and that led to college rodeos. When I
got out of college and entered the real workforce, I continued to balance work with my hobby of barrel racing.”
Her barrel racing hobby soon became a side activity of developing barrel horses. She said,
“I would buy horses off the track from a local racetrack guy there in Lufkin. I would just start them on barrels and see where it would go.”
Robyn explained how buying one mare marked a change in her program, “Buying
these racetrack horses is where a mare named Rock N Roll Rona came from. I bought her and decided to dabble in the barrel futurity world and I didn’t start small. I jumped right in to Fort Smith - the daddy of them all. We missed going back to the finals by like 2 tenths (of a second).”
Robyn began breeding some mares, and this opened another phase of the program. “I started raising racehorse yearlings to
sell at racehorse sales. Then, I would buy more horses off the track, start them on the barrels, and sell them.”
Her next move made her a stallion
