Alejandro Arenas Badillo Classic: Select Auction Futurity -RG3
REINA DE REINAS
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Trials for this traditional futurity took place Sept. 2-3. Ten runners qualified from 20 trial races that were run on a muddy track. The remaining horses were entitled to the consola- tion prize. There were a total of 171 two year olds entered, the highest number of participants in this race so far. Each horse nominated was presented in the 2016 Select Auction and paid into the race, bringing the total purse for the Futurity and Consolation to $5,916,900 pesos (approximately $331,395 US).
The futurity finalists returned on Oct. 1 with the goal of winning the biggest purse
for Quarter Horses at the Hipódromo de las Américas. SF Simple Quickheart was scratched, leaving only nine runners.
The most requested at the betting box office to win the race was the sorrel filly Reina De Reinas, with odds of 2.50 to win, followed by fastest qualifier Hippy Dashin Horse (2.70), who ran the trials in :17.115.
The track was reported as good, but this contrasted with the muddy quality of the actual surface. A tremendous downpour came while the horses were taking their starting positions and throughout the race, but fortunately with no problems for both horses and riders.
Puente Villa (#8) led at the start, but was passed by Reina De Reinas (#2) under the successful guidance of Moisés González García. Fearless Kid (#4) and Puente Villa closely followed her strides, but Reina De Reinas
bravely held and asserted her dominance, crossing the wire 3/4-length in front.
Given the weather conditions, the race was hand timed with the winner crossing the line in :17.26, good for a 97 speed index. Reina De Reinas also won the May
14 Mexican Futurity under
jockey José Ángel Ambrosio.
In this race, she was ridden by
Moisés González García, who
also rode the filly in her trial
to this race.
Despite the downpour, the award was headed by honoree Alejandro Arenas Badillo and Luis Miguel Albores Gleason, breeder and owner the filly,
in the presence of Adriana Gómez Barnola, Manager of the AMCCCCM.
Visibly moved by the
victory, Luis Miguel Albores enjoyed the award under the torrential downpour. “I did not mind getting wet to receive recognition for what was achieved by the filly and my team,” he said. “The filly will rest the rest of the year so that she will reach the derbies in 2018. For now, we are satisfied with her performance and with our other winners of clasicos this year.”
Reina De Reinas (La Jollaroid-Royal Miss Della, Royal Quick Dash) is the third to win two of the futurities restricted to Mexican breds
auctioned. In 2004, Speed Be First (Ought
To Be First-Sweet Speed, Son of Steel), and in 2016 Valentino Mystery (Mr Queens Mystery- Valentina High, Brimmerton), added to their records the Garañones and Selecta Auction
Futurities.
In the 2016 auction,
Hip# 287 Reina De Reinas was sold for $110,000 pesos (approximately $5,994 US) and was purchased by Luis Miguel Albores for San
Lázaro de Arará Cuadra. The filly debuted on March 5, winning her maiden and then winning her next three races that included the Mexico Futurity. She was a finalist in the Garañones Futurity, where she finished in sixth place.
On Sept. 3 Reina De Reinas qualified for the Select Auction Futurity with
the third best time (:17.432), returning to win the final in the manner outlined above. Her current record is 6-0-0 in 7 starts on the track.
With this record, Reina De Reinas is likely to achieve some of the highest distinctions
of the 2017 season that are awarded by the AMCCCCM, with the subsequent accolades for her owner, trainer, jockey and breeder.
