and he was the breeder of Joe Reed II and Little Fanny, the sire and dam of Leo. They are both sired by Joe Reed. House sold all four of these horses, spreading their influence throughout the breed. Joe Reed went to Dr. J.J. Slankard of Elk City, Oklahoma, where he sired many more
great horses. He was such a successful sire that he was awarded #3 in the AQHA Stud Book - A prominent honor reserved for the top stallions that were designated the AQHA Stud Book Foundation Sires. He became
Joe Reed P-3. Bert Wood brought Joe Reed II and Little Fanny to Arizona, where he
continued to cross them and produced full brothers and sisters to Leo. Lester J. Manning bought Leo and took him to Eagle Pass, Texas, to begin his racing career.
Leo made his first start at Eagle Pass at
18 months of age. Oklahoma trainer Bill Morgan saw Leo run and negotiated for John Tillman to purchase him from Manning for $750. Tillman brought Leo to Pawhuska, Oklahoma, to race where he became
known as the “Pawhuska Powerhouse.” Leo reportedly ran 22 races during this time, winning all but two of them. He met and defeated such runners as Cyclone, Red Sails, Good Eye and Johnny Barnes.
The two races Leo lost were to two different mares on consecutive weekends. Bill Rowe and Max Michaelis were the men that teamed to beat Leo and break the bank at Pawhuska with two Louisiana race mares. Punkin was the first mare to defeat Leo. She was by Flying Bob and out of a mare by
Old D.J. Punkin stumbled at the start but managed a 1/2-length victory. Lady (later registered as Randle’s Lady) defeated Leo the next weekend. She was sired by Doc Horn, an army remount Thoroughbred, and her dam was an Old D.J. mare. Some pedigrees show her dam to be by a son of Old D.J. Leo
Punkin, the first mare to beat Leo, is pictured here at Eagle Pass in 1943.
