Maiden Stakes
FROM ARIZONA
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translated by Speedhorse
The Maiden Stakes is a conditioned event for Quarter Horses three years and older who are maidens at the time of nomination. There were six who met this requirement and their owners paid $33,000 pesos (approximately $1,757 US) to enter the race, which made up the main part of the purse that amounted to $301,600 pesos (approximately $16,057 US). They raced at 350 yards on Feb. 26, the second day of activities of the 2023 season.
When the race began, they all started neatly. However, a few yards into the event Sixes drifted sharply to the left and when the jockey corrected her, she went towards the center of the track. This was reflected in the final results. As the race continued, the brown filly From Arizona clinched the lead, crossing the finish line with a comfortable 1 3/4-lengths win over SE Corona Cruzin, in second place.
Yair Daniel Báez Soto was the jockey responsible for riding her on the track, as well as to the winner’s circle once the official verdict
was given, which included a time of :17.36 for a speed index of 86.
Jesús Báez, representing
the Mexican Association of
Quarter Horse Breeders and
Horsemen, accompanied
by José Mauricio Dorantes,
Operations Manager of the
Hipodromo de las Américas
racetrack, presented the awards
to the Rabanal Cárdenas
Family, owners of Rancho Las Gaviotas and From Arizona, as well as trainer Rafael Gandiaga Hernández, who was responsible for saddling
the filly. The good work done by Hernán Misael and brothers Rodrigo and Uriel Romo in the preparation of the filly should be highlighted.
Bred by Dr. Edward C. Allred, the winner is
by leading sire Favorite Cartel and out of the mare Kingman Kin by Raise A Secret. The mare has also produced Hulapai (SI 101, $204,307), Oatman (SI
102, $192,737), and Old Six Six (SI 92, $73,723) among others. From Arizona was consigned
to 2021 Los Alamitos Equine Sale, where she was purchased by Alejandro Castañeda for $45,000. The filly later became the property of Rancho Las Gaviotas in a private deal with Tabasco Racing LLC.
This is her first win from three starts on the track, with
two previous second place finishes, for which she has earned $150,800 pesos (approximately $8,023 US), for a total of $222,380 pesos in her brief career.
In second place was the colt SE Corona Cruzin (Corona Cartel-Penelope Cruzin),
who is bred and trained by Joaquín Ramón Peláez-Cortés. The colt is owned by the Cuadra Santa Elena and jockey Rosalino Alcudia was responsible for the ride.
