Francisco Pasquel Classic
SPEEDN EAGLE
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translated by Speedhorse
The 2023 season at the Hipodromo de las Américas racetrack began on Feb. 25 with races for Thoroughbred horses. The next day, the fast Quarter Horses came into action with the Francisco Pasquel Classic and the Maiden Stakes on the Feb. 26 schedule.
Here we refer to what happened in the Francisco Pasquel Classic, which was a 110- yard race for horses three years old and older born in Mexico, of which 6 participants were entered. With the retirement of the favorite Lafishingonabugsmoon, there were five that competed for a purse of $303,200 pesos ($16,143 US approximately).
The betting preferences were consistent with the order of finish, marking Speedn Eagle as the clear favorite. He was the winner of the race, which is the only 110-yard stakes on the oval’s equestrian calendar.
Within the small group, Speedn Eagle distinguished himself by having a race free of errors or setbacks. Starting from position 1, he moved directly towards the finish
line under the serene command of Luis Antonio Aguilar to beat Sea Chicks Horse by 1/2-length, who veered towards the outside rail of the track and lost valuable fractions
of a second.
Speedn Eagle ran the short distance in :6.78 for
a speed index of 102. Upon returning, he was received
by his trainer José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona, who led him to the winner’s circle where he was received by members and followers of the Cuadra Cartas Blancas.
The award ceremony
was hosted by Jesús Báez,
representing the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, and José Mauricio Dorantes, Operations Manager of the Hipodromo de las Américas racetrack, who presented the corresponding trophies.
Speedn Eagle is a five-year-old chestnut gelding that was bred by Salomé Gallegos, owner of the stallion Jabuti Eagle SA (by One Famous Eagle) and the mare Speednchico (by Dashin Chico). Speedn Eagle’s record consists of 19 races with a 6-5-2 record, this being the first classic to be accredited to his account to which he added earnings of $151,600 pesos (approximately $8,072 US). In his two- year-old campaign, he was a finalist in the Garanones Futurity-RG2.
As already mentioned, second place went to the colt Sea Chicks Horse (Sea Horse Corona-Chicks Toast, Toast To Dash) with jockey Jorge
I. Nieto. Like the winner, he was bred by Salomé Gallegos, belongs to Cuadra La Toñita, and his trainer is Luis Alejandro Nieto Muñoz.
Third across the finish line was the gelding CC
Secret (Cartel Executive-Hot Little Secret, Walk Thru Fire) led by Cruz Antonio Monterrosas. He was bred by Carlos Espinoza, is owned by Rancho Las Gaviotas and was saddled by trainer Rafael Gandiaga Hernández. Followed by Royal Glory Dash (Texas Kool- Guadalupe First) with José Manuel Cisneros
in the stirrups; and SE Valquiria (Royal Invasor-Antonellas Doll) with her rider Martín Hernández. This mare started late and fell, thus resulting in her last place finish.
