a breeding pattern of 3 X 2 to Leche that follows our look at horses in this pedigree that are closely inbred. Skit Skat, the dam of Super Chief, is by Barney Owens, a stallion that
was used by Wiescamp early in his breeding program. Barney Owens is by Jack McCue
by Peter McCue. Skit Skat is out of Miss Helen by Plaudit. This gives Super Chief a breeding pattern of 4 X 3 to Plaudit and is another example of inbreeding in the pedigree of Super Chief. Overall, Runnin Rose has a breeding pattern of 5 X 6 X 5 to Plaudit.
The dam of Miss Super Hope gives us another example of the mating of two inbred but unrelated horses to form hybrid vigor. Miss Super Hope is out of High Hopes by Dick Thomas by F & H Bill Thomas and the dam of Dick Thomas is a mare by F & H Bill Thomas. F & H Bill Thomas is by Buck Thomas by Peter McCue. This gives Dick Thomas a breeding pattern of 1 X 2 to F & H Bill Thomas.
High Hopes is out of Parade Knot by Parade Step by Dress Parade by Man O’ War by Fair Play. The dam of Parade Knot is One Knot by Fair Wind by Fair Play, and this gives Parade Knot a breeding pattern of
4 X 3 to Fair Play. Thus, High Hopes is another example of crossing two inbred but unrelated horses to get hybrid vigor into the pedigree.
I see the pedigree of Tinys Effort as an example of how inbred individuals can be used to cross on other unrelated inbred individuals, promoting hybrid vigor and forming a very interesting breeding pattern in the pedigree of the horse you are studying.
THE TINY’S GAY FACTOR
Tiny’s Gay was the 1974 AQHA Racing World Champion, AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and the AQHA Racing Champion Stallion. He earned these titles with 12 wins and one second in 13 starts, with stakes wins in
the Tumbleweed Futurity, Bay Meadows Futurity, Kansas Futurity and Rainbow Futurity, with a second in the All American Futurity when he couldn’t catch Easy Date.
Tiny’s Gay then underwent surgery
to a repair a fracture at the top of his
splint bone and would not race again. He retired to sire six crops with 328 starters, 239 ROM, 16 stakes winners and 23
stakes placed foals who earned over $3.4 million. His leading money winner is Merridoc, who in 1979 won the Golden State Futurity and Bay Meadows Futurity. Tiny’s Gay as a broodmare sire had progeny earnings of over $9.7 million. The record shows that he is the broodmare sire of
631 starters, 448 ROM, 39 stakes winn n
daughters Send Me Candy, Tiny Lou Etta, Diamond Spoon and Pfeffernusse are all mares that have formed their own family of runners. Here are some examples of runners from each of these mare families: Send Me Candy is the third dam of Jess Good Candy, the 2015 AQHA Racing Champion Two- Year-Old Colt, and Candy Cartels Cat, winner of the 2016 Decketta Stakes-G3; Tiny Lou Etta is the third dam of Cold Cash 123, the 2011 AQHA Racing World Champion, and Flying Cowboy 123, the 2018 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Colt; Diamond Spoon is the third dam of Apocalyptical Jess, the 2018 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old; and Pfeffernusse
is the third dam of One Famous Eagle,
the 2008 AQHA Racing Champion Three- Year-Old Colt.
Let’s not forget Tinys Rose Bud, as she is the third dam of Terrific Energy, Ima Chickie Two, Sizzling, Red Storm Cat, Eagles Span, Tinys Famous, Genovese, Hardtoget and Reacher 16. Then we drop back and see she is the fourth dam of Lynnder 16, Rattle N Battle, First of 15, Coronas Boy, Executive Stride and Thermonuclear Energy.
For whatever reason, the mystery of why some great prospects don’t live up to their potential on paper will continue to perplex their owners. But as we have seen with Tinys Corona Queen, breeding the next generation is more than a race record, and her strong pedigree reinforces why she is the 2018 Speedhorse Broodmare of the Year.

and 32 stakes placed runners. His lead d
money winner is Merganser, the 1988
All American Futurity winner and Wor r
Champion for that year.
We often find stallions that make an
g
impact through the tail female line or th
t
bottom line of the bracket pedigree throu
their daughters. Tiny’s Gay has certainly
shown that he has been an integral part o o
the tail female line of some very successfu
runners from some great mare families. H
