Casady Casanova, February, 1985
by Speedhorse Staff
The year 1985 marks the twentieth anniversary of the death of Top Deck. Top Deck’s name is so prominent in today’s racehorse pedigree that it’s hard to believe he’s been dead for twenty years.
Top Deck’s prominence as a sire didn’t come over night. His race career never materialized because of an injury he sustained as a foal. He was given to his south Texas trainer, Earnest Lane, by Robert J. Kleberg, Jr.
of the King Ranch. J.B. Ferguson saw the value of the untried stallion and is the man credited with providing Top Deck with the opportunity to prove his worth as a sire. Ferguson bred his mares to Top Deck and the first foal was the stakes winner Stardeck F. The third foal produced was the great sire Moon Deck. Ferguson even- tually bought Top Deck for his own use. A.B. Green and Ferguson later formed a partnership with Top Deck going to Oklahoma to stand at stud.
