 Firecracker Futurity
JeSS Be HAwkin
by John Moorehouse
Sneakin Bye and Jess Be Hawkin tallied the top two qualifying times in trials for the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass. When the $27,500 futurity took place on Independence Day, then, it was no great shock to see those same two horses vying for the victory during the final yards.
Jess Be Hawkin beat Sneakin Bye to the wire by only a head, collecting her third win in four starts and first in stakes
company. The filly, owned
by Jose Cancino Sanguino,
also improved her lifetime
earnings to $13,186 with the
addition of the $11,000 win-
ner’s share of the Firecracker
Futurity purse.
Prepped by trainer Donald Young, Jess Be Hawkin’s win total included a victory in the futurity trials, during which the filly clocked a :17.980 that stood
as the second-best time of all the would-be finalists. She proved to be even faster during the futurity itself, completing the 350 yards in :17.750 for a 93 speed index. That’s the second- fastest index of her career.
Jess Be Hawkin needed every bit of that speed. She broke from the three gate second, just behind top qualifier Sneakin Bye (Dashin Bye-Sneak Bac). Those two horses would battle
for the lead for the entirety
of the race. Jess Be Hawkin trailed her rival filly by a head both at first call and at mid- stretch, but the filly made a move for the lead during the final few yards to reach the finish line first. Tad Skaggs rode Jess Be Hawkin to her first-ever stakes victory.
Jess Be Hawkin is the first foal out of the winning Hawkinson mare Livid, who is owned by Walter Nix. Brad
Delp Orchards, Inc., bred Jess Be Hawkin, who was foaled in Washington. A 2004 mare, Livid is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner and track record setter Some Come Runnin, stakes- placed winners A Bug Light, This Cowgirl Leavin, Dickson Creek and Leavin Laredo, and graded stakes finalist How Bout Leavin.
Sneakin Bye’s connections—owner Gary Chumbley, trainer Scott Raley and jockey Ruben Camacho—settled for second place.
Young also trains BG I Came I Saw Iwon (First Thoughts-Antonios Shorts), an 18-1 underdog at the betting window which fin- ished third for owner Letisha Martinez. Jockey Luis Gonzalez did the riding.
The remaining order of finish in the Firecracker Futurity was Shelbyjean (TR Dasher-Jazzing Pink), One Famous Strawfly (One Famous Eagle-Strawfly Lady), Rumors R Flyin (First Thoughts-Easy Rumors), Rogue Country (Kipas Special-Royal Stakes Quick) and GC Streakin Okey (Okey Dokey Dale- Bedaub Adash).
