 Belles Stakes
CAnDy CARTeL
by Tracy Gantz
Candy Cartel may have had to travel to Canada last year to become a stakes winner, but the Oklahoma-bred is showing her ability to dupli-
cate that effort in her home state. After taking the Decketta Stakes-G3 as one of two victories in four starts at Remington Park, Candy Cartel moved to Fair Meadows and added the June 30 Belles Stakes.
When the gate opened in the 350-yard Belles Stakes, Klassy Sassy stumbled to the outside of Candy Cartel. That didn’t faze Candy Cartel. Jockey Tony Bennett pointed her straight for the wire and she never let anyone close, winning by a length in :17.756.
Candy Cartel has spent most of her career in Oklahoma, though she started three times in Texas at 2. She had a perfect record in three Canadian starts—two allowance victories at Ajax Downs and the Fort Erie Derby last year.
Clinton Crawford trains Candy Cartel for owner Carl Pevehouse, who bred the 4-year-old mare from multiple stakes winner This Candys Special. The mare has produced seven winners from nine starters, including multiple stakes winner Jess Special Candy plus stakes-placed Send Me Candy Paint, Stole The Candy, and Jess A Candy Gal.
Abreez (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Jos Wild Rose) closed for second under Paul Nieto. Jose Aguilera trains the 4-year-old mare for owner Rocio Nunez. Abreez’s most recent victory was in $7,500 claiming company.
Marty and Shalia Powers’ Kelli Kae (Ivory James- Just Like Bully) finished third with Stormy Smith aboard. Trained by Kasey Willis, the 3-year-old filly ran third in last year’s Oklahoma Futurity-G3.
Completing the field were Eyesa Romantic (Eyesa Special-How Romantical), Kinky Boots (Agouti-Pure Oklahoma), Sumokin (Country Chicks Man-Bye Bye Baby Goodbye), Klassy Sassy (Country Chicks Man-Sassy Corona), and Make It Susie (Make It Anywhere-Move On Susie).

maybe his talented siblings intimidated him, but when A Mere Dynasty came to the track, he didn’t want to be a racehorse. He finished seventh
in his only 2011 race, and owner Felix Gonzalez and his son Jose Luis were ready to quit. Jose’s brother Miguel, however, urged them to keep trying.
Miguel knew what he was doing. The family gave A Mere Dynasty some time off, and he has returned with a perfect season thus far this year. He broke his maiden at Los Alamitos in March, added an allowance race in May, and became a stakes win- ner in the June 30 Vandy’s Flash Handicap.
In against the stakes-winning favorite Kool Million, A Mere Dynasty quickly took the lead and strode home an authoritative winner by a half-length in :19.746 for the 400 yards. Cruz Mendez had rid- den both horses and opted for odds-on Kool Million, leaving A Mere Dynasty in the hands of his brother, Santiago. Jose Moreno trains A Mere Dynasty for the Gonzalez family.
Jose is listed as the breeder of A Mere Dynasty, and the family bred the gelding from their win- ning mare A Mere Classic. She has produced seven starters, all of them winners. Two of those—Grade 1 winner A Mere Chocolate and Grade 3 winner A Mere Splash—are multiple stakes winners, and A Mere Special is graded stakes placed.
Ed Allred’s homebred Kool Million (Bono Jazz- Kool As Ever), trained by Jose Flores and winner of the 2012 Dillingham Handicap, finished second over Ivlis (Snowbound-TB-Going Single). Oscar Peinado rode Ivlis, who was coming off a three-race winning streak, for owner-breeder Anita Bramlette and trainer Dean Frey.
Completing the field were Oceanik (Ocean Runaway-Jess Genuine), Personal Mission (Special Leader-Tantalizing Eyes), and Steller (Stel Corona- Inthetwinkleofaneye).
TQHA Sires’ Cup Stakes

it’s not often a person can make 10 times their invest- ment, especially in the racing business. But Bob McClure has done just that with Dale N James, a
yearling he bought for $8,000 in 2009. Dale N James increased his lifetime earnings to $84,010 by winning the June 30 TQHA Sires’ Cup Stakes at Retama Park.
Drawn on the inside for the 400-yard Sires’ Cup, Dale N James broke out of the gate on top and stayed snug on the rail. Executive Prince to his immediate outside tried to get close, but Luis Vivanco kept Dale N James going strong. The 4-year-old gelding length- ened his stride to win by a half-length in :19.872.
Dale N James was winning his first stakes in
the Sires’ Cup, though at 2 he finished third in the Gillespie County Fair Futurity-G3. His four earlier victories came in a maiden race and three trials. Cindi Keeton conditioned Dale N James for the Sires’ Cup.
McClure selected Dale N James out of the 2009 Heritage Place Yearling Sale. The Sunflower Supply Co. Inc., bred and consigned him to the auction. Dale N James is the first starter for his dam, winner Sweet Jessica James. Stakes-placed Sign It Sweet, the second dam, is a half-sister to five stakes winners.
Executive Prince (Executive Menace-Sticky
N Picky) finished second for jockey Francisco Calderon. Judd Kearl trains the 4-year-old gelding for Bennie and E. Teresa Jeter.
Kearl also trains J J Racing’s Eyes Blew By You (Mr Eye Opener-This Candys Fast), another Sunflower-bred, who ran third. Rodrigo Vallejo regularly rides the 4-year-old gelding.
Rounding out the field were Carry On (Panther Mountain-Carry On Dash), Nearctica (Ocean Runaway-Especially Tricky), Trunk Monkey (Feature Mr Jess-Annie Run), The Field Cricket (Lead The Field-Quick Lil Cricket), Sory Nokita Bola (Dash Thru Traffic-Behold A Zowie), and Runnin Lady (Tres Seis- Elusive Wabbit). Im Dee First was scratched.
