Allens Cash: an unexpected retirement.
by Luis Prieto Zamudio • translation by Eduardo Silveyra
Never before has a Quarter Horse set a world record outside of the United States.
Allens Cash, the current world record holder at 250 yards, has been retired from racing, according to Alejandro Garcia, representa- tive of the racing block Cuadra El Forastero and owner. The announcement was made on Nov. 12, a day before the nominations to the next Champion of Champions Classic, where his presence was expected alongside of renowned Quarter Horse sprinters 3 years of age and older.
The main reason for retiring “El Taliban” (as he is known in match races), is due to a wound he suffered on his poll during his transit by land from Tecamachalco, Puebla, to the Hipodromo de Las Americas to participate in the Premio Drop Of Corona on Oct. 21. Upon arrival to the racetrack he was attended by veterinarians, as well during the night in his stable, which allowed for a successful healing of the wound.
However, since the day of the race, the stallion was very reluctant to embark onto the trailer and was unruly on his way home, conduct which worsened in the following weeks. To continue to compete at the Hipodromo de Las Americas, the horse would have
double fears: during loading into the trailer and dur- ing the four-hour trip to the Mexico City racetrack. “We do not want to risk him. The horse has already shown his ability at the racetrack and match
races. Three years ago we had a bitter and sad experi- ence with the transportation of “El Rombo” (Million Dollar Check) and we do not want even want to imagine if this were to repeat. It is better to prepare him to go to stud,” said Alejandro Garcia, a member of the racing block Cuadra El Forastero.
“We will help him overcome the trauma through specialized treatment, because it will probably be required at some point to move him and it’s best that it be done safely and for him to recover his confi- dence,” concluded Alexander.
Retirement comes at age 7, in full physical health, with a record of 5-2-0 in seven official starts. In just four months, Allens Cash caught national and inter- national attention in the racing world: he remained unbeaten in his first five starts, won the inaugural classics (stakes races) “Inaugural” and “Velocidad;” and beat the world record at 250 yards on Feb. 19 with a time of :12.72. He then came back on March
