Filimon Saucedo initially thought that if his family stood in the winner’s circle after the Dec. 15 Evangeline Futurity, it would be
with Flirtingwithamiracle, owned by his wife, Marina Nino. Instead, they celebrated with The Scotch Is Dun, who runs in Saucedo’s name.
“We were really happy,” said Saucedo. “This horse always jumps out of the gate late, and then at the end he catches them.”
That’s exactly what happened in the Futurity. The Scotch Is Dun broke eighth, which put him in a little close quarters when Shazooms Love to his inside tightened things up on him. Jockey Luis Vivanco urged The Scotch Is Dun forward, and the gelding responded. It looked like the finish would come down to a close decision between Dashin Brown Streak and RC Had To Be My Day, but The Scotch Is Dun thrust his head in front of both of them to win the 400-yard race in :20.035.
“Right after the race, he was still jumping around,” said Saucedo. “The next day, he acted like he hadn’t even run.”
Saucedo was especially proud because his son, Juan Saucedo, trains The Scotch Is Dun and Flirtingwithamiracle.
“He loves training the horses,” said Filimon. The family lives in Elgin, Texas, where they own a ranch and raise cattle.
Filimon has a construction company as well, which keeps him busy.
“I had horses a long time ago,” he said, “but I sold out for a while. We got back into it about six or seven years ago.”
The family owns close to 50 Quarter Horses, with about 15 in training.
“We are looking forward to next year too because we have six or seven babies,” Filimon said.
The Evangeline Futurity, which added $95,212 to The Scotch Is Dun’s bankroll, is Saucedo’s biggest win.
Though The Scotch Is Dun
had never before attempted a
stakes, he has been a consis-
tent winner.
He scored by a half-
length in his racing debut at
Retama Park in July. After
a poor break at the Gillespie
County Fair, where he
finished fifth and was placed
fourth through a disqualifi-
cation, The Scotch Is Dun
performed well at Lone Star
Park. There he captured two
races and finished second
once. He won his Futurity trial at Evangeline as the sixth-fastest qualifier.
“The one time he finished second, they bumped him but he kept coming,” Saucedo said.
Saucedo bought The Scotch Is Dun privately for only $2,500. Already gelded, the youngster initially gave the Saucedos a little trouble in his early breaking, but he soon settled down.
“He’s like an old horse now,” said Saucedo. “He’s real quiet.”
Saucedo is looking forward to running The Scotch Is Dun next year at Lone Star.
“It will have to be 350 to 440 yards because he likes the longer races,” Saucedo said. “We may even try him at 550.”
The T I Cattle Company bred The Scotch Is Dun
in Texas from the win-
ning Royal Shake Em mare Butterscotch Shake. All three of the mare’s starters have won. The third dam, Moontonya, produced stakes winners Reign Splash and Truckle Toy, the latter a champion in Mexico. Reign
Splash in turn produced graded winners BCR The Reign Man and Reign Of Terror.
Dashin Brown Streak (Hotdoggin-Annas Streakin Dash) finished second by a nose under jockey Gilbert Ortiz. Matias Lopez trains the gelding for owners Wade Navarre and Melvin Hatley. A winner twice at Remington Park, Dashin Brown Streak fin- ished second in his Evangeline Futurity trial to fastest-qualifier Jetblack Gold Moment and had the fourth-fastest qualifying time.
Jesus Longoria’s RC Had To Be My
Day (Hadtobenuts-Make It My Day) saved third by a nose with Eddie Cox in the saddle. Trained by Alex Villarreal, the colt won the John Deere Sam Houston Juvenile Challenge-G3 and finished third in the John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship-G2 at Prairie Meadows.
Odds-on favorite Jetblack Gold Moment (Jet Black Patriot-Royally Streak) finished fourth, followed by I See Visions (One Famous Eagle- Vision Of Dash), A Zoomin Fortune (Shazoom- Salute To Six Gun), Flirtingwithamiracle
(Dean Miracle-CP The Flirt), Shazooms Love (Shazoom-La Lover), Beaucoup Bonnechance (Jumpn Chic-Beau Diva), and Jazzy Hero (Valiant Hero-Jazzy Corona).
