dana Point Handicap
new Look
by Michael Compton
owner Martha Wells and trainer Dan Francisco had plenty to be grateful for the day after Thanksgiving as their charge, New Look, won for
the sixth time in 11 starts this season, adding the Dana Point Handicap at Los Alamitos on Nov. 23 to his growing list of accomplishments.
Confidently handled by jockey Rodrigo Aceves, New Look broke sharply from his inside post posi- tion and dashed to an emphatic score, defeating runner up J D by a half-length in the 300-yard fix- ture. With the outcome never in doubt, New Look stopped the timer in :15.426.
Winner of the El Primero Del Ano Derby-G2 at Los Alamitos in April, New Look entered the Dana Point off a dominating victory at odds of 7-1 in the Town Policy Stakes, also at Los Alamitos on Nov. 2.
Bred in California by El Allred, New Look is produced from the Separatist mare Make Over, who was winless in a five-race career. New Look, her only foal to race, now boasts career earnings of $141,090. The promising 3-year-old has kept top company. In addition to his three stakes victories, he also finished sixth in this year’s Governor’s Cup Derby-G2 and was sixth in the Golden State Derby-G1.
J D, testing stakes company for the first time rallied nicely approaching the finish to gain second under Alex Bautista. Trained by Cody Joiner, J D (Teller Cartel-Annie Eye Over) is a Wootan Racing homebred. Study Hall Pierce (TR Dasher-Strict), piloted by Eduardo Nicasio, finished third in a steady effort. The multiple stakes-placed runner, an Ed Allred homebred, is also conditioned by Joiner.
Fourth-place finisher Delight At Night (Corona Cartel-A Delightful Legacy) stumbled at the start and was vanned off after the race.
Red Dasher (TR Dasher-Corona Rouge)and Whata Corona Runner (Corona Cartel-AB What a Runner) completed the order of finish.
Baxter Andruss oregon-Bred F.
SneAkIn Bye
by John Moorehouse
Sneakin Bye charged into black type in convincing fashion on Dec. 2 at Portland Meadows, winning the $28,400 Baxter Andruss Oregon Bred Futurity by a one-length margin. A Gary Chumbley home-bred, the filly improved her record to 3-1-1 in seven starts. She was previously second in the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass, and third in the Far West Futurity.
Jockey Deborah Hoonan, who won seven races on the card, was aboard in the Baxter Andruss as the filly made a sharp break from the five hole and established herself second behind early leader Rogue County. Sneakin Bye pulled into a half-length lead by the midway point, and continued to distance herself from her competitors in the final yards.
Trained by Scott Raley, Sneakin Bye covered
the 400 yards in :20.570. The filly’s victory brought home an $11,360 payday that more that doubled her prior career earnings to a new total of $22,565.
Chumbley bred Sneakin Bye out of Sneak Bac, who was third in the 2007 Northwest Distaff Challenge. Both of Sneak Bac’s race-age foals are starters; Sneakin Bye is her first stakes winner.
Rogue County (Kipas Special-Royal Stakes Quick), the top qualifier, finished a game second
for the gelding’s owners at Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch and Racing. The Cedric Hayden trainee had jockey April Boag in the irons. Chumbley also owns show finisher GC Streakin Okey (Okey Dokey Dale- Bedaub Adash), a 28-1 longshot. Raley trains GC Streakin Okey as well, and Jose Guerrero rode.
Mr Foxy Zoom (Foxy Tejon-Hope Too Zoom), Mr Speedygonzalez (Fastnfierce-Tough And Speedy TB), Hezacruzin Fer David (Hezaspicymeatsaballa- Cruisin For Curtis), Grammys Spitfire (Royal Miracle Dip-Miss Royal Bux), JS Fly Angel Fly (Fly Jess Fly-Book Smart), Little Fools Cash (Cancino Dash-TC Mamas No Fool) and Dash Bella (Separatist-Dorothy Nell) completed the field.
Paul B. Ford Mem. Handicap
MISter MICHAeL
by Tracy Gantz
Awet, sealed track and 550 yards appealed to Mister Michael, who is finding his niche in longer races. The colt came on strongly at the end of the Dec. 14 Paul B. Ford Memorial Handicap at Los Alamitos to post his first stakes victory.
When the gate opened on the compact six-horse field, Properly Snowbound broke on top while the odds-on favorite, Frequentflyer, veered toward the outside rail from post six. Shes Prime Time took over the lead, and Mister Michael and Impassion Queen dueled with each other near the rail. Mister Michael, ridden by Gregorio Arriaga, vanquished the other two as they approached the wire, drawing off to win by a half-length in :27.200, a clocking that was hand-timed.
Jose De La Torre trains Mister Michael for himself and his brother Gustavo. The colt won last year at 300 and 350 yards, and finished second in the 2012 Red Cell Turf Paradise Distance Challenge, his first try at 870 yards.
Alessia/Brown/Davies LLC bred Mister Michael, who sold for $4,000 at the 2010 Los Alamitos equine sale. The colt’s dam, Dash For Kate, has produced five winners from six starters, including 2010 Golden State Juvenile winner Girlie Man. Grade 1-placed Streakit Special is the dam of Dash For Kate as well as stakes winners First Special Dash and Dashin With Johnny and four stakes-placed runners.
Shes Prime Time (Hawkinson-Sweet Beduino) finished second by a neck under Cody Jensen. Lin Melton trains the filly for Abigail Kawananakoa.
Gianni Samaja’s homebred Impassion Queen (Snowbound-TB-Queen Of Appeals) ran third. Cesar DeAlba piloted her for trainer Paul Jones.
Completing the field were Frequentflyer (Bono Jazz-Flyagra), Properly Snowbound (Snowbound- TB-Properly), and Berkley Gal (Snowbound-TB- Ipomea). Ladies Royal Six and Perfect Place were both scratched.
