Corona Chick Handicap
CreoLe wILLIAMS
by Tracy Gantz
As a Louisiana-bred named for a character who makes homemade wine, Creole Williams might look out of place at Los Alamitos in Southern California. But the gelding fits the circuit just fine, as he proved with a win in the Nov. 17 Corona Chick Handicap.
All Jock and IBA Dream Away broke slightly inward, causing IBA Dream Away to bump Creole Williams. That kept Creole Williams from the front, but he and jockey Cesar DeAlba made up ground throughout the 400 yards. They challenged odds-on favorite Sugarbear Sax Man to win by a half-length in :19.843.
“The extra distance helped him,” said Paul Jones, who trains Creole Williams for the Double Bar S Ranch LLC. “It’s nice to run at 400 yards.”
Creole Williams, whose name comes from the David Lee Murphy song “Dust On the Bottle,”
has raced exclusively at Los Alamitos and broke his maiden in his racing debut. He finished second in two allowance races and ran fifth in the Autumn Handicap, “coming on strong at the end,” said Jones.
Raymond Loup bred Creole Williams from win- ner Picture Perfect Tee. All five of the mare’s starters have won. Picture Perfect Game finished third in the 2008 Mardi Gras Derby-RG3, and DC Power Zoom ran second in the 2007 Mexico Derby Challenge.
Sugarbear Sax Man (Tres Seis-Therestischemistry) finished second for jockey Cruz Mendez and trainer Jose Flores. Cesar Edgardo Muniz Gomez owns the gelding, who won the Autumn.
Jones also trains third-place Bolt Lightly (Check Him Out-Jess Racy Eyes), who was ridden by Rodrigo Aceves. The filly, bred and owned by John Andreini and Vince Genco, had won three of five prior races.
Completing the field were Secret Hero (Valiant Hero-With Real Intent), Zesty (TR Dasher-Pie Maid), All Jock (Walk Thru Fire-Feminista), IBA Dream Away (Ocean Runaway-IBA Dream), and Airplane Gold (Chicks Regard-Takin Some Gold).
Las damas Handicap-G3

Last year a bumping incident at the start kept Getit Together from her best performance in the Las Damas Handicap-G3, and she finished second. This
time, the filly avoided trouble and came home victori- ous in the 400-yard Los Alamitos fixture on Nov. 18. Owner-breeder Mimi Wells attributes part of
the improvement to jockey Oscar Peinado and her regular trainer, Dan Francisco.
Peinado coaxed Getit Together out of the gate on the rail in good order and then urged the filly forward. That allowed Getit Together to do just as her name suggests. The 4-year-old burst past Touch Of Paso to win by a half-length in :19.867.
In her last start before the 2011 Las Damas, Getit Together captured the AQHA Members Plus Stakes.
Wells bred Getit Together from her homebred Dash Thru Traffic mare Seronka. Francisco also trained Seronka, who was stakes-placed twice. The mare has produced six winners in eight starters.
Larry Konecne’s homebred Touch Of Paso (Jumpn- Queen Judea) finished second for jockey Osvaldo Macias and trainer Charles Treece. The 4-year-old
filly ended 2011 with a victory in the Corona Kool Handicap and placed in two stakes earlier this year.
Favored Separate Thoughts (Separatist-A Lil’ Alimony-TB) was a neck back in third with Antonio Alberto in the irons. Pat Visscher trains the 3-year-old filly for owner-breeders Theresa and Edward DeNike. Separate Thoughts won the La Pacifica Handicap and was second in the PCQHRA Breeders’ Derby-G3.
Completing the field were Onemoreglassofwine (Heza Fast Dash-Fine Wines), Queens R Blue (Shazoom-First Place Queen), Feature Jessie Gail (Feature Mr Jess-Streakin Jessie Gail), Enjoy The Walk (Walk Thru Fire-Enjoy The Moment), Royally Sandra (Royal Quick Dash-Lady McDiva), Tac Out (Check Him Out-Separate Tac), and Check N Fetch (Check Him Out-Shyann La Jolla).

Hez Our Secret went wire-to-wire in the Z. Wayne Griffin Director Stakes held Nov. 24 at Los Alamitos, and claimed one of the final three spots in
the lucrative $750,000 Champion of Champions to be held Dec. 15 at that same track.
A 3-year-old colt, Hez Our Secret clinched his spot in the prestigious competition for older horses with an impressive wire-to-wire win under Ricky Ramirez. Trained by Trey Wood, Hez Our Secret completed the 400-yard event in :19.608, winning by three-quarters of a length. Owner Johnny Trotter collected $8,250 for the win. Hez Our Secret now has lifetime earnings of $750,695.
Though this marked the first stakes win for Hez Our Secret, who was second in both the All American Derby-G1 and the Los Alamitos Super Derby-G1 earlier this year. He also qualified to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity-G1 and Rainbow Futurity as a 2-year-old.
Vessels Stallion Farm LLC bred Hez Our Secret and owns his dam, stakes-placed Secret Separation. Hez Our Secret is her second stakes winner, joining Secretly Famous, who won the Pat Hyland Memorial Handicap earlier this year.
The other two horses to hit the board also quali- fied for the Champion of Champions. Senor Toby (Mighty Invictus-Micheles Alibi) finished second for Brad Lohr and Daniel Reynoso. Jaime Gomez trains Senor Toby and Oscar Peinado did the riding. Jess You And I (Feature Mr Jess-Gold Daze) is a Paul Jones trainee owned by the Double Bar S Ranch LLC. Cesar DeAlba was aboard.
The remaining order of finish was Thisfeatureisspecial (Feature Mr Jess-This Girl Is Special), Sparky E Boy (Hawkinson-YR Brown Lucy), Hot Hitter (Walk Thru Fire-Chickasis), Creston Goer (TR Dasher-Secret Goer) and Shining First Dash (First Down Dash-Keep On Shining).
