Lou wooten and Sydney valentini Handicap-rG2
LIttLe BIt SoutHern
by John Moorehouse
despite winning last year’s version of the Lou Wooten and Sydney Valentini Handicap, Little Bit Southern was listed at 7-1 odds head-
ing into this year’s $85,000 handicap. So much for the odds; the mare won the race for the second straight year, getting to the wire first by a neck on Dec. 16 at Sunland Park.
Owned by Edilberto Estrada, Little Bit Southern posted her third victory in seven outs this season and improved
her overall record to 9-7-4
in 35 starts. She holds three
stakes wins, two of which
have come this year. In addi-
tion to her pair of victories
in the Wooten/Valentini,
the mare also won the Four
Corners Senora Stakes-RG3
at SunRay Park.
Trained by Miguel Castillo, Little Bit Southern led at every call of the 400- yard handicap. The mare
broke on top from the No. 3 gate, held a half- length advantage at the first call and main- tained that separation through mid-stretch. Wonwabbitwon made a bid during the final yards, but Little Bit Southern withstood the challenge to preserve victory.
Jockey L. Martinez was aboard as Little Bit Southern completed the race in :19.078 for a 94 speed index—topping her time in last
year’s victory in this same event, when she finished
in :19.163 for a 91 index. Estrada collected a $51,000 payday for the victory, which improved the mare’s bankroll to $314,950.
Richard and Patricia Shearer bred Little Bit Southern out of Averys Little Bit. Little Bit Southern is the only stakes winner foaled by Averys Little Bit, who has produced five starters among
six offspring. Four of the five are winners. Wonwabbitwon (Rabbits Rainbow-Win
Comes Easy) finished second in a stakes race for the second consecutive out. Sierra Moseley does double duty as owner and trainer. Jockey Alejandro Medellin did the riding. Snow Regard (Chicks Regard-Sha Hooy Hooy) fin- ished a length clear in third place. Home-bred by KH Logax Inc., Snow Regard is trained by Juan Gonzalez and was ridden by Jaime Leos.
The remaining order of finish was Angelina Fame (Furyofthewind-Flame Ta Fame), Dorothys Version (Latest Version-Ole Auntie Em), Gotloveifyouwantit (Genuine Strawfly- Sinn Bug Special), Call Me A Blazn Chic (Chicks A Blazin-Willie Call Me) and Asian Brook (Brookstone Bay-RR Miss Saigon). Call Me A Blazn Chic was the heavy favorite at 3-5 odds, but hesitated and drifted out.

Louisiana Champions day Juvenile-rG2
PerryS runAwAy
by Tracy Gantz
Give Perrys Runaway a track in Lousiana and he will win there. His four victories have come at four different tracks—Louisiana
Downs, Delta Downs, Evangeline Downs, and now the Fair Grounds. With his Dec. 8 Fair Grounds victory in the Louisiana Champions Day Juvenile-RG2, Perrys Runaway also graduated to stakes winner.
Donald Watson has ridden Perrys Runaway in all six of his starts, and the
two make a good team. In
the Champions Day Juvenile,
Perrys Runaway popped
out of post 11 and vied with three horses to his immediate inside. They couldn’t stay with the gelding, however, and when no one else chal- lenged him, he shot to a half-length victory in :17.485 for the 350 yards.
Fifth in his debut when he was fractious at the gate,
Perrys Runaway won his next three races for owner-breeder Gerald Libersat and trainer Kevin Broussard. In his first stakes attempt, Perrys Runaway finished third in the
LQHBA Breeders’ Futurity-RG1 at Evangeline before the Fair Grounds race.
Libersat bred Perrys Runaway from the winning Mr Jess Perry mare Ms Perrys Money. All three of the mare’s starters have won. Perrys
Runaway became the first stakes winner for his sire, Sir Runaway Dash, who is a full brother to champions Wave Carver and Ocean Runaway.
Jaime Torres’ Coltins Fast Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Six Streakin Salute) rallied for sec- ond under Martin Rubalcava after breaking through the gate and bumping hard at
the start. Fructuoso Huitron trains the gelding, who most recently finished second in the
LQHBA Breeders’ Invitational.
Gilbert Ortiz piloted Bare Naked Martini
(Jet Black Patriot-French Martini-TB) to third for owner James Magnon and trainer Matias Lopez. In May, the filly ran second in the Louisiana Lassie Futurity-RG2.
Completing the field were Champions Passage (Storm Passage TB-Miss Jessie Bug), Cougar
Hill (Panther Mountain-Lovers Dash), Beer And Peanuts (Coronas Leaving You-Streakin Attitude), Dashin Gage (Oak Tree Special-Dash Lady
Love), Victoria Sweet Angel (Jess Louisiana Blue- Kokopelli Hills), Bigtime Beau (Bigtime Favorite- Bedawee Beau), Downtown Corona (Coronas Leaving You-Down Town Diva), Dreamers Fast Dash (Heza Fast Dash-Dashin In My Dreams), and Ms Jingles (Bigtime Favorite-Some Quick Dasher). Dashin Forward, Jethro Almitey, Lets Jess Do It, and Sixes Slinky Secret were scratched.
