Racing May Return To Great Falls
After a two-year hiatus, horse racing could return to the Montana State Fair in Great Falls. The commissioners in Cascade County, which owns the track, voted unanimously on Feb. 27 to join with the Great Falls Turf Club to allot 4 days to horse racing. The biggest challenge to host- ing a meet will be funding, and much needed repairs would need to be made to the track, but the efforts could bring racing back to the fair on July 20, 26, 27 and 28. There will be no racing in 2013, however, for Northwest Montana Fair in Kalispell, Western Montana Fair in Missoula, or Yellowstone Downs in Billings. Tentative race dates of May 12 and 18-19 are scheduled for Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City.

Bill Would Reduce Capital Gains Holding Period For Horses
Congressmen Andy Barr (R-KY) on March 6 introduced the Equine Tax Parity Act to reduce the capital gains holding period for horses from 24 months to 12 months. The bill would align horses with most other business assets, and would eliminate a 44-year-old tax provision that discourages investment in the equine indus- try. By reducing the holding period by half, horse owners and breeders would have more flexibility to sell their horses. According
to President and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Association Alex Waldrop, the change would make investments in racing and breeding stock more attractive.
