  lady Bugs Moon Stakes
PAiNT ThE CANDy lANE
by John Moorehouse
So far, so good during the young racing career of Paint The Candy Lane. Carl Pevehouse’s homebred gelding improved his record to two wins in as many starts and added black type with a commanding run to first place in the $34,000 Lady Bugs Moon Stakes on April 14 at Remington Park.
Jockey Tony Bennett brought Paint The Candy Lane out of the No.
2 gate on a sharp break, and
wasted little time in getting
the gelding to the front of
the eight-horse field. Paint
The Candy Lane proceeded
to pull away and draw clear
of his competition, easily
winning by daylight.
Paint The Candy Lane, curiously, has won both of his races to date by the same margin: 1 1/2 lengths. His first start was in a trial to the Oklahoma Futurity-G2 on
March 3. The Clinton Crawford trainee hand- ily won his trial, although his winning time was not fast enough to qualify for the finals.
In the Lady Bugs Moon, Paint The Candy Lane covered the 330 yards in :17.346, collect- ing a $19,788 prize for his owner/breeder that pushed his lifetime earnings to $25,572.
Pevehouse also owns Eden Lane, a 2003 Devon Lane-TB mare who
is the dam of Paint The Candy Lane. Eden Lane has produced two foals to date, both of whom have made starts. Paint The Candy Lane becomes the first member of the brood in black type.
There was a photo
finish for second through fourth place, and First Down Shazoom (Shazoom- Nonanon) proved to be best by a neck for runner-up hon- ors. Gabriel Gutierrez owns
the gelding, saddled by Guillermo Valdivia and ridden by jockey Alex Baldillez Jr.
Shazoom Dude (Shazoom-Wess Stinky Baby) finished a nose shy of Cy Captain Tom but was elevated into third place when Cy Captain Tom got disqualified from third to fourth for interference. Valdivia also trains Shazoom Dude, who is owned by Curtis Tuggle and had Randy Wilson aboard.
Cy Captain Tom (Tailgunner Tom-My Suebiscuit), Barbs Bullet Train (Royal Blue Chew Chew-Fastball Gone), Chew Chew Showtime (Royal Blue Chew Chew-Color Tip), JS Oceans Dash (Ocean Runaway-Shaken Easy Dash) and Bye Bye Prize (First Prize Perry-Bye Bye Bygones) rounded out the field.
The Lady Bug’s Moon is named after the colt that won the 1969 Rainbow Derby and would later become a top stallion.

Mister lewie Paint and Appaloosa Memorial handicap-G1
BArNEy oFiElD
by Tracy Gantz
Barney Ofield and Captain Bucko are turning Paint and Appaloosa stakes into an intense breed competition. Barney Ofield,
a Paint, and Captain Bucko, an Appaloosa, have met twice at the current Remington Park meeting. Captain Bucko drew first blood with a victory in the March 24 Paul Harber Paint and Appaloosa Memorial Handicap. But Barney Ofield took revenge in the April 14 Mister Lewie Paint
and Appaloosa Memorial
Handicap-G1.
The pair drew into oppo- site ends of the starting gate, Barney Ofield on the rail and Captain Bucko on the outside. Barney Ofield jumped out
on top under jockey Kenny Muntz. Though he drifted out a bit, Barney Ofield had everyone’s measure from
the outset of the 400 yards. Captain Bucko closed ground,
but this time the 3-year-old didn’t threaten the 6-year-old, who won by a length.
Barney Ofield, the 2011 champion Paint solid aged horse and gelding, was winning his second consecutive Mister Lewie. Eddie L. Willis trains the gelding for his wife, Joni, and Julie Haywood. Eddie Willis and Haywood’s husband, Justin, bought Barney Ofield as a 4-year-old from breeders Bill and
Marion Hoskin. Barney Ofield has also won the 2010 TPHBA Paint and Appaloosa Maturity-G3 and the 2011 Green Country Handicap.
Shero, the dam of Barney Ofield, has produced four winners from five starters, including 2012 Oklahoma Paint Futurity-G1 winner Laus Deo and stakes-placed Bailout and Spotless Redneck. Runaway Rosie, a full sister
to Shero, is a champion Paint
who won the 1998 Graham Paint Futurity. Captain Bucko (Cartel Success-Joyball),
ridden by Adalberto Candanosa, races for Anita Ruiz and Jessica McCurry’s RacinRNs and is trained by Luis Villafranco. Captain Bucko was a champion at 2 and has won four stakes.
PF Chief Runnin Bear (Grand Point-SC Running Cloud), who finished third under G. R. Carter Jr., is a two-time world champion Paint. Judd Kearl trains him for owners Sherry Koltiska and Lynn and Betty Bettinger.
Completing the field were Special Sign APHA (Special Leader-Signs Of Summer), Snows Mr Money Bags APHA (This Snow Is Royal-Ms Eye Opener), BG The Widow Maker ApHC (Takin The Cash-Fling T Black Widow), Flash Of Silk APHA (SF Royal Quick Flash-Judys Silk), and Dos Jakes APHA (Dos Poruno-Bug Lover). WW Granite Treasure APHA was scratched.
