Au Revoir Stakes
SlinkyS FoRtune
by Stacy Pigott
History was made on Dec. 16 at Evangeline Downs, when American Quarter Horses ran on the turf for the first time ever in the
state of Louisiana in the $35,000 Au Revoir Stakes. Held on the closing night of the 2011 Evangeline Downs meet, the 870-yard Au Revoir was won by the always-tough cam- paigner Slinkys Fortune.
Ridden by Orlando Baldillez, Slinkys Fortune loaded into post
position six in the eight-horse
field. The seven-year-old
gelding broke next to last and settled in at the back of the pack, several lengths off the leaders. Circling the field around the turn, Slinkys Fortune was five wide enter- ing the stretch while Dr Drip and Toast To La La opened up a five-length advantage on the field. Down the straight- away Slinkys Fortune simply
exploded, chasing down Dr Drip to win by a widening two lengths. The time was :46.284.
The win was the 10th lifetime for Slinkys Fortune, who didn’t begin racing until the age of four and has never run at a distance other than 870 yards. Sired by Dashs Slinky, Slinkys Fortune has now won six stakes races with career earnings of $232,223. His others stakes wins came in the Marathon Stakes
(twice), Magnolia Stakes, Live Oak Stakes, Los Alamitos Stakes, and Faubourg St John Stakes. He is stakes-placed an additional six times.
Slinkys Fortune was
bred in Louisiana by Ronald Gilmer out of the Six Fortunes mare Chasing A Fortune. He is the only stakes winner for the mare, who has five starters from seven foals.
Dr Drip (First To Shine- High Seas Operator) gave up
a commanding lead in the final stages of the Au Revoir to finish second under jockey Danny Lavergne. Anthony Arey owns and trains the seven-year-old gelding, who won an allowance race in his last start on Oct. 22 at Evangeline.
Big Bad N Brown (Gold Regent-TB-Molly May Eye) crossed the wire third for owner/ trainer Janet VanBebber. The seven-year-old gelding was stakes-placed several times last year before dropping into the claiming ranks this season. Rafael Fernandez was in the irons for the Au Revoir.
The top three were followed by: Lockin Lips (Streakin La Jolla-Lip Locked-TB), Panther Warrior (Panther Mountain-This Girl A Warrior), and Heza Patriot Dream (Game Patriot-In Your Dream). Heza Fast Classic was scratched. Toast To La La (Toast To Dash-La La Missy) did not finish.

Jess Perfect Corona may not have run a perfect race in the Margie Bryan Futurity on Dec.
18 at Turf Paradise, but the results couldn’t have been better as the Count Corona filly scored a nose victory in the $27,315 stakes race.
Ridden by Alejandro Ortega, Jess Perfect Corona loaded into post position nine in the 10-horse field and left the gates a bit slowly at the rear of the field. The filly didn’t really get rolling until midway through
the 400-yard race, but when she did, there was no stop- ping her. In a driving finish, Jess Perfect Corona nipped favored Macy Bay at the wire to win by a nose in :20.063.
Sent off at odds of 18-1, Jess Perfect Corona earned $13,658 for her second win and first stakes win. Feather Two Livestock owns the two-year-old filly, who was trained by Monica Ortega.
