turf Paradise Championship
A SPlASH oF Hell
by Stacy Pigott
ASplash Of Hell extended his winning streak to three with a solid three-quarters of a length win in the $15,000 Turf Paradise Championship on Dec. 18 at Turf Paradise.
Running for the partnership of Mark Turner and Kim Melton, A Splash Of Hell ran a perfect race in the Championship. With jockey Michael Iammarino in the irons, A Splash Of Hell broke on the lead from post position nine and was never
headed, going wire to wire
to win the 440-yard race in
:21.719.
The outside half of
the field fared well in the Championship—the top four finishers came from the four outside posts—as they avoided the trouble that plagued the inside half of the field. Jess Watch Me, racing from post six, bore in midway through the race,
interfering with several horses. A steward’s inquiry resulted in his eventual disqualifica- tion from eighth to ninth.
Trained by Derek Couch, A Splash Of
Hell had clear sailing for his 12th career win and second stakes win. The six-year-old Splash Bac gelding also set a 440-yard track record
at Yavapai Downs last year in the L. Curtis/ Robert Kieckhefer Memorial Stakes and ended
the year as AQHA’s West/ Southwest Hi-Point Aged Gelding.
Bred by Las Vegas Ranch, A Splash Of Hell is one of two starters from six foals for the Shoot Yeah mare Come Hell Or Hiwater. Her other starter, All About Larry, ran fifth in this race. A Splash Of Hell’s second dam is the stakes-placed winner All Hell Is Loose, a half-sister to graded stakes win- ner Rush Fora First Down.
Finishing second was A Faster Streaker (Heza Fast Man-A Streakin Rose) and jockey Rick Oliver. The well-traveled nine-year-old gelding raced in four different states in 2011 with two stakes-placings for owner Lori Harris and trainer William Harris.
Alma Ramos’ A Real Dasher (Dashin Chico-A Real Alibi) was third with Hector Aldrete in the saddle for trainer Pedro Gomez.
The remaining order of finish was Hard Act (Separatist-Brace It), All About Larry (Heza Motor Scooter-Come Hell Or Hiwater), Summit Bid (Mountains Majesty-Shirleys Strawfly), Wartime Rocket (Royal Quick Dash-Got A Sweet Streak), Gettinthere (Check Him Out-Dustys On A High), DQ-Jesswatchme (Feature Mr Jess-Watchin The Rain) and The Bounty Man (Streakin La Jolla-Gold Medal Dash).

Mockingbird Stakes
oCeAnS Potion
by Tracy Gantz
oceans Potion is a true daughter of the South. Bred in Alabama, she broke her maiden in Louisiana and became a stakes win-
ner in Florida when she captured the Dec. 18 Mockingbird Stakes at Hialeah.
Stumbling at the break, Oceans Potion appeared to have given up too much ground to her competitors with the Mockingbird being
a 220-yard race. However, she immediately got her feet back under her
and exploded to forge to the
front in a powerful display
at the wire. Patrick Watson
brought the filly home a
half-length in front. They
stopped the timer in :11.809,
just :160 (approximately one
length) off the track record
of 11:649.
Joseph Manucy is training Oceans Potion at Hialeah after Darrel Soileau handled her in Louisiana
for owners Carl and Luanne Humphries. At Delta Downs, Oceans Potion finished second in a trial for the All Breed Futurity, finishing sixth in the May 7 final. She then won a Nov. 5 maiden race at Evangeline Downs before heading to Hialeah.
Bred in the name of Evans and Evans, Oceans Potion is out of Streakin Ms Jess, who finished second in the 2006 Jack Clifford
Stakes at the Bay Meadows Fair. Oceans Potion is the first of two winners from two starters for the mare.
Orlando Orozco owns and trains Patti Corona Today (King Corona-Todays Market), who finished second with Josh Dearmon aboard. Orozco began training her after she made three starts at Delta Downs and one at the Fair Grounds. Patti Corona Today broke her maiden at
Evangeline Downs in her first start for Orozco and added a second victory there before the Mockingbird.
True Action (PYC Paint Your Wagon- Queen Then And Now) ran third with Alex Baldillez Jr. in the saddle. Guillermo Valdivia trains True Action for owner Mora Raudel. Prior to the Mockingbird, the filly won one of three races at Will Rogers Downs.
Rounding out the field were Rapid
Ivory (Ivory James-Rapid Fire Cash), Storm Mountain (Corona For Me-When Love Fades), He So Special (A Regal Choice- Shenoshespecial), Corona With Friends (The Corona-Dynamite Friends), A Country Boy Can (Dashin Is Easy-Sound Of The Drum), CF Chickasaw Warrior (PYC Paint Your Wagon-Ohares Secret), and Victorias Identity (Identity Theft-Victoria Shines).
