And, 21-month old Camryn Waters enjoys looking at the horse pictures in Speedhorse, says proud papa Rob Waters, of Fort Smith, Arkansas.

Racing Medication Statement On QH Welfare
The Equine Health, Welfare, Integrity and Research Subcommittee (EqHWIR) released
a statement regarding the welfare of racing Quarter Horses, which says, in part, “The wel- fare of the racing American Quarter Horse is a priority for those involved in the industry, as well as AQHA. The Association and its racing depart- ment have an oversight responsibility when it comes to problems, including medications, that
threaten the safety, integrity and viability of the racing American Quarter Horse.” The state- ment goes on to encourage AQHA members and horsemen to, “report any person violating the rules and regulations of the state, Association of Racing Commissioners International and AQHA to protect the horses, horsemen and fans that enjoy and participate in the sport of American Quarter Horse Racing and all horse racing.”

Florida Barrel Race Wagering Causing Rift
Saturday, Dec. 17 was the grand opening of Creek Entertainment Casino in Gretna, Flori- da, a small casino operated by Gretna Racing, which is owned by the Alabama-based Poarch Creek Indians and gambling lawyers David Romanik and Marc Dunbar. It is the only place in the country where gamblers can bet on barrel racing. Bets can be placed on races
as pairs of barrel racers compete in a series of elimination races, with the winners of each race facing off until a grand winner emerges. The casino is using the barrel races as a venue to run poker tables and, they hope, slot machines. The casino was even designed with a blow-out wall to accommodate the machines if voters ap- prove a referendum on January 31. The permit, however, is being challenged in court.
According to the Palm Beach Post News and the Florida Quarter Horse Racing Association, many in the state’s horse industry, the AQHA, and other organizations such as the National Barrel Horse Association, feel Gretna Racing has attempted to bypass the state’s requirements by having Florida declare “barrel racing” as
a pari-mutuel event because the state has no statutory definition of “horse racing.” Oppo- nents of the referendum, as well as Governor Rick Scott, do not believe lawmakers meant to include barrel racing when they passed laws reg- ulating pari-mutuels, and they want lawmakers to fix the gray area before the January vote.
Corrections
In the 2012 Stallion Register, the stud fee for Awesome Chrome AQHA/APHA is in- correct. The correct 2012 stud fee is $1,250.
On page 75 of the Barrel Stallion Regis- ter, the stud fee for PC Frenchmans Hayday (Sun Frost-Caseys Charm, Tiny Circus), also known as Dinero, should be $3,000.
