Garanoñes Futurity
SEA TOAST
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The 18 qualifying trials to the final and consolation of this futurity were contested on June 10 and 11, 2023, over a distance of 300 yards. Colts and fillies of Mexican breeding participated in the Select Yearling Auction held in August 2022, who paid the registration fees and tested negative for prohibited substances in the mane tests carried out prior to registration.
They were very competitive trials, where
the fastest times were not determined until
the end of each day. On the first day, BR Siete stood out with :15.170, which ended up being the best positioned finalist, while on the second day the best mark went to AG First Taa Daa, who covered the distance in :15.260.
The ten qualifiers appeared in the finals on July 2, and betting preferences favored BR Siete and the entries from Cuadra Los Arrallanes in Super Carter and AG First Taa Daa.
Once the corresponding protocol was fulfilled, they took starting positions and the race was dispatched.
Except for the visibly delayed start of Feature Mr CC, each horse left their posts neatly and with their sights set on the finish line. It was
BR Siete who had the greatest opportunity, but
he was soon displaced by the dapple filly Sea Toast who took the lead and crossed the finish line in first, and he finished a neck behind AG Strke Three who made a tremendous run on the right flank.
In the course, the filly Per Corona Caliente (#3) swerved to the left and disturbed the race of Doctora Burybuu and DK Kamaia who were riding close to the inside rail. This fact provoked two protests and an investigation by the stewards, which led to the disqualification of the offender from fourth to tenth place with the consequent effects in their positions.
The race was resolved in :15.29 for a speed index of 85, with jockey Miguel Ángel Rodríguez directing Sea Toast.
The filly Sea Toast was bred in Chihuahua by Mr. Salomé Gallegos, owner of the stallion Sea Horse Corona and the mare Chicks
Toast by Toast To Dash. At the time she was presented at the Select Yearling Auction (Lot #462), where she was quoted at $250,000 pesos (approximately $12,410 US) being acquired
by the Cartas Blancas stable for which she ran
during her brief career. She left an impeccable record
of five starts, always under the training of José Eduardo Baltazar Carmona.
The breeding of Mr. Salomé Gallegos must also be
credited with the triumph in the Mexico Futurity, where the filly Felina Eagle, a daughter of the stallion Jabuti Eagle SA and out of Feminine Feline by Relagate TB and owned by the Cuadra Hermanos Parra, was crowned champion.
The total purse of the Garanones Futurity was 5,262,500 pesos (approximately $299,398 US), of which $3,783,750 pesos (approximately $215,268 US) went to reward the owners of the finalists, corresponding to $1,589,175 pesos
for first place ($90,412 US approximately).
It should be noted that 13.5% of the total proceeds from this futurity is allocated as an incentive to the owners of the finalists stallions and is distributed in the same proportion as the prize to the horsemen.
AG Strke Three (Prerogativ–Strike) finished in second place under the assistance of Luis Daniel Falfán for Cuadra El Delirio and
Sea Toast and jockey Miguel Ángel Rodríguez win the $299,398 Garañones Futurity. 230 SPEEDHORSE August 2023
