John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge
MR CORONA PERRY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
The two qualifying races for the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge were held on June 4, resulting in the ten finalists. The final took place three weeks later over a distance of 350 yards and for a prize of $789,314 pesos (approximately $44,753 US).
Qualifying with the best time of :17.70, Too Late For Goodby was the favorite in the betting windowsl. However, the result was less than expected and first place went to the colt Mr Corona Perry.
The filly Runaway Bravisima (#3) started strong but deflected to the inside and impacted Temp Me Perry (#2) as the other participants made their run. Soon the colt Mr Corona Perry stood out in the center of the track to establish a clear dominance until crossing the finish line with a difference of 2-lengths over the filly Docs Dashing Gipsy (#3).
Jockey Alejandro Gómez Díaz was responsible for driving Mr Corona Perry, setting a time of :17.95 on a particularly deep track. This was his second victory; the first was obtained in the qualifying trials.
The winning team, led by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortes and his family, was awarded by Adriana Gómez Barnola, Manager of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, accompanied by Manuel Queijeiro, a member of the organization.
Mr Corona Perry is a son
of Mr Jess Perry and out of
Samba Corona MV by Corona Cartel. He was raised in the United States by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortes, who is also his trainer and is owned by Cuadra Santa Elena, in the name of which the juvenile runs.
For this victory, he adds $363,084
pesos (approximately $20,586 US) to his earnings account, in addition to the right to represent Mexico in the AQHA Challenge Championships scheduled for Oct. 21 at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie in Dallas, Texas.
Having a good race, Docs Dashing Gipsy (Docs Best Cart-BP Dashing Suzie) finished
in second place with Miguel Ángel Rodríguez at the reins. She belongs to the Jojola R Stable and is also trained by Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortes.
In third place was the colt You Dew You (KVN Corona–High Valley Girl) ridden by Luis Alberto Fernández for the Cuadra TD and his trainer Alberto
Fernández Pasten.
The order of the remaining positions
was as follows: A Fiery Moon (Moonin The Eagle–Eye This Candy), Too Late For Goodby (Lota PYC–Saturday Night Ride), Cash Floow (Corona Cartel–Famous Little Reba), Into Glory (Into Mischief TB–A Shot At Glory), RM Pinky Perry (Jess Cant Wait–Pinky Breen TB), Temp Me Perry (Paint Me Perry–JB Queen Tempting) and Runaway Bravisima (Duponte – Bravisima) who was disqualified from ninth to tenth place for the offense committed against Temp Me Perry.
Mr Corona Perry prevailed with a wide advantage under jockey Alejandro Gómez Díaz in the John Deere Mexico Juvenile Challenge. 228 SPEEDHORSE August 2023
