Adequan Mexico Derby Challenge
JESS THREE CANDY
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
Five participants ran in the American Quarter Horse Association Adequan Mexico Challenge. Four of them were males bred in
the United States; Pinky Cartel was the only participating female - and of national origin. The integrated prize for this race was $580,588 pesos (approximately $32,791 US), where the AQHA contribution of $15,000 was essential.
The stipulated distance was 400 yards and in the race the runners performed freely from start to finish. Ponte Trucha (#1) had the best start and maintained the lead for a good part of the route until Jess Three Candy (#2) made his way through the center of the track with a powerful stride to overtake him for first place, also enduring the onslaught
of Hes Genuine (#4) who finished in second place by a neck.
Heriberto Camacho Sotelo was the jockey aboard Jess Three Candy, who finished the 400 yards in :20.00 for a speed index of 80.
Bred by Diane M. Evans, he is by the stallion Jess Good Candy and out of mare Grade One
Winner by Tres Seis. After winning his maiden at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie
on Oct. 14, 2022, he was consigned to the 45th Annual Winter Mixed Sale at Heritage Place in Oklahoma, held on Jan. 19-21, 2023, where he was auctioned for $28,000
to MC Horse Sale Track &
Supply. He was later acquired
in a private deal by Rancho
Las Gaviotas, based in the State of Morelos, in whose name he currently runs.
Under the coaching of Alfredo Rabanal Salinas, he debuted in Mexico with a win at the Hipódromo de Las Américas in an allowance on May 7, 2023, winning by 3/4-lengths. It was a preparation race to enter him in the Adequan Mexico Derby Challenge, which he won on
the terms already described, adding his record third win in six starts and earnings of $300,743 pesos (approximately $17,052 US).
With this victory
he obtains the right to participate in the Challenge Championships, which this time will take place at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie in Dallas, Texas, on Oct. 21.
Hes Genuine (Corona Cartel–Our Genuine Delight) placed second, running well under the direction of Alejandro Gómez
Díaz for Cuadra Santa Elena and trainer Joaquín Ramón Peláez Cortés.
Immediately after, the competitive Ponte Trucha (Duponte–Apollitical Dasher) finished third with Yair Daniel Báez Soto at the controls. He belongs to Cuadra Los Gavilanes, where Rubén Romo García trains him.
Also participating: Pinky Cartel (The Ocean King–Pinky Breen) from Cuadra Sosa AGS; and Famous Glory Rider (One Famous Eagle–Eye Of Glory) from the Cartas Blancas stable.
