Anselmo Aguilar Classic
JOEY GAROO AT
by Luis Prieto Zamudio, translation by Speedhorse
On June 25, the seventh edition of the Classic was held in honor of Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán, a prominent breeder of
Quarter Horses at his La Presita stable. It was a conditioned competition for horses of the Quarter Horse breed of three years of age and older born in Mexico, whose owners paid the corresponding registration.
There was an accumulated prize of $387,600 pesos (approximately $21,976 US), of which 50% went to the winner and the rest in decreasing percentages for the second to fourth place finishers.
Given their background, the odds leaned in favor of the veteran Lafishingonabugsmoon, a previous 3-time winner of this Classic (2019, 2020 and 2021) and the chestnut filly La Corona Eagle, winner of the Mexico Derby on March 12.
Shortly after leaving the gates, SE Cartel Wine (#3) changed course to the left, blocking the path of LA Feature This Bell (#2). The rest of the actions took place in a whirlwind, highlighted by the gray dapple Joey Garoo AT in response to the energetic command of his rider Mario Alberto López Marmolejo. Very close to him, the other dapple in the group
Lafishingonabugsmoon
did the same, meeting the demands of rider Yair Daniel Báez Soto. However, he was hunting down the leader.
The 350 yards were covered by the winner in :17.59.
Dr. Anselmo Aguilar Payán was represented at the award ceremony by Adriana Gómez Barnola, Secretary of the Mexican Association of Quarter Horse Breeders and Horsemen, who presented the corresponding trophies to the team from the Cuadra San Luis Aculco, headed by Adelfo Toledano Montero.
Joey Garoo AT is a four-year-old gelding,
a son of the stallion Kangaroofirst and out of the Mi Gata by Senior Solo. He has a record of 21 starts, with 4 wins, 6 seconds, and 1 third to which he added earnings of $193,800 pesos (approximately $10,988 US) for a total of more than 843 thousand pesos. He was saddled by trainer Hugo Estrada López.
Participating in futurities and restricted derbies for auctioned Mexican horses, in this case in 2020, he placed second in the Desafío Crianza Mexicana Derby and in the Mexico Derby in
2022, with the Anselmo Aguilar being the first classic to add to his record.
Showing that at
10 years old he still
has vigor and speed, Lafishingonabugsmoon
(Nofishinonafullmoon-A Special Ladybug) finished in second place receiving instructions from his jockey Yair Daniel Báez Soto. He belongs to Cuadra Los Gavilanes where he is trained by Rubén Romo García. His record is already 16-14-4 in 45 races with accumulated earnings of more than 3 million pesos.
AG Navigating Mighty (Jess Navigating-BHB Mighty) placed third well managed by Orlando Fernando Monterrosas. He is owned by Cuadra El Delirio and trained by Ismael Parra Martínez.
At the end of the competition, the judges disqualified Candy Krash, from fifth to seventh place, so the order of the participants is as follows: US Chicks Cartel (Krash Cartel–US Chicks), La Corona Eagle (Mr Eagle Master– La Corona Six), La Feature This Bell (Feature This Cold–Ottyes Bells Gal), and Candy Krash (Krash Cartel–Catalina Coronada).
